In folk fantasy and archaizing stylization, Adolf Born found a form that inspired him. Solid contours, careful hatching and calligraphic elements combine into the rich stylistic range of Born's narrative. Each graphic is a bit of a pun and a mystery - cunning courtiers are perhaps presenting Sirael herself, perhaps another muse to Emperor Rudolph II. on an imaginary Trojan boar full of Turks led by Johannes Kepler. The emperor, completely dazed, doesn't even notice a nudge from Kateřina Stradová. Harlequin (Arlecchino) in the commedia dell'arte is cunning to the point of malice, often thinking mainly of himself. The theme of the jealous Harlequin, who wants everything for himself and keeps Columbine on a leash or in a cage, was worked on by Adolf Born several times in graphics. In Born's view, the sinister harlequin is a distinctive caricature of himself. Adolf Born became the leading personality of the generation that created and raised modern Czech cartoon humor to the world level. Adolf Born (1930 – 2016) became known to Czech audiences primarily as the creator of the evening dramas Mach and Šebestová or Žofka and her adventures. He said of his illustrations: “I like it when the illustration lives a parallel life alongside the text. When the adventures of the funny dog are being told, I also develop the story of the cat sitting behind the fence. Children enjoy it, they can figure out both stories." Adolf Born breaks down the boundaries between "big" and "small" art and draws inspiration for each illustration from the bottomless hat of imagination and fantasy.
