San Francisco. Cal." measuring 35" x 43". San Francisco was the biggest whaling port during the late 19th Century. This view depicts the Arctic Oil Works plant in the Potrero Hill waterfront area at Illinois and 16th Streets. The complex and California Street Offices were built and established in 1884. Boats traveling from the Arctic would transport whale and seal oils to the oil works refining plant to make soap and other related products derived from the whale oil. Bosqui was also one of the organizers of the San Francisco Art Association in 1871 and the Bohemian Club in 1872. In 1897, his home in Marin County burned down, destroying his large collection of paintings by local artists as well as his own. In 1906, the firm was destroyed by a great earthquake.Although unsigned, this view may have been executed by Edward Bosqui himself or by another artist whose painting Bosqui produced as a valuable colour lithograph.
