        Ervin Bossanyi, British/Hungarian 1891-1975 - The Washing of Feet; tempera on plywood panel, 104 x 151 cm (ARR) Provenance: the studio of the artist; Phillips, London, 11th December 1990; Bonhams, London 29th July 1993, lot 107; Bonhams, London, 6th October 1993, lot 46 Notes: Ervin Bossanyi, is a Hungarian artist who, after emigrating to England in 1936, became known for his stained glass designs. Stained glass windows designed by Bossanyi are in a number of notable locations, including at the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Tate Gallery, and Senate House Library, all in London. Stained glass windows by Bossanyi are also in place in ecclesiastical settings, at the chapels of St John’s College and St Peters College in Oxford, and York Minster. Examples of Bossanyi’s windows are owned by the Stained Glass Museum at Ely Cathedral. This painting clearly echoes the work produced in the artist’s favoured medium of glass, with its religious theme, contrasting colours and strong figuration recalling the central features of Bossanyi’s windows.         Oil on panel Germany, around 1930 Ervin Bossányi (1891-1975) - Hungarian Painter and craftsmen, active in Germany and England Signed lower right 'Bossányi' Loving representation of the Nativity in earthy colors and washed color application Overall dimensions framed: 56 x 70 cm Good condition This painting, executed in oil on wood, was created by the Hungarian artist Ervin Bossányi who lived in Lübeck and Hamburg until his emigration in 1934. He first learned at the academy in Hungary and the Académie Julian in Paris. Bossányi designed among other things, church stained glass windows. Our painting, illustrating the depiction of the Nativity, might be considered as a draft or study, further the flat and translucent painting technique may be an indication for that. The oil painting is signed lower right 'Bossányi' and is in good condition with slight signs of age and wear. The wooden panel shows few minor cracks and imperfections around the edges, mainly due to the material. The panel measures 43 x 57.5 cm. The framed dimensions are 56 x 70 cm.
