HENRY PETER BOSSE. 9 PHOTOS OF AND FROM A MISSISSIPI BARGE.

      Est: $1,000 - $2,000

HENRY PETER BOSSE. 9 PHOTOS OF AND FROM A MISSISSIPI BARGE. Bosse (1832 – 92) was in the Army Corps of Engineers. He was commissioned to make a series of cyanotype photographs along the river that have become masterpieces of photography. Prints are in the collections of most of the major art museum in the US. His work was supervised by his friend Alexander Mackenzie, who lived on a magnificent barge, the “Floating Palace,” where Bosse stayed when he was making the photographs. The photographs that led to the modern appreciation of Bosse’s work came from a house in which Mackenzie had lived. These photographs were found in the same house. The most interesting of the group are four views of the interior of the “Floating Palace,” the magnificent barge on which Mackenzie lived in high style, while supervising the work. Approximately 5 x 7 inches on printing out paper. They show the office, the bedroom, the bathroom, and the kitchen with a cook. These photographs reveal an aspect of the life on the Mississippi, and intimate aspects of Mackenzie’s life style. The 4 1/2 x 7 ¼ inch photograph of the cook in the galley is very light, the others somewhat less so. There are 3 smaller views of working boats. The smallest shows the “Barnard” wintering beneath the Eads Bridge in St. Louis. One small print shows a boat pulled up to the shore. It has numerous pencil notations on the verso. It is clean but a little light. Another shows two boats pulled up to shore, with figures and a bridge behind. The forward boat is either the “Lucia,” named for Mackenzie’s daughter, or the “Elsie,” named for the daughter of the great engineer Montgomery Meigs. The boat behind is the “Vixen,” later renamed the “Henry Bosse.” This is a highly interesting group from many points of view.
