        VÁCLAV BOŠTÍK 1913 - 2005 - A WINDOW TO DEPTHS

        Est: -

According to Jiří Šetlík, from whose collection the work comes, Window to the Depths is a magnificent work by Boštík. It is said to be one of his insights into the universe, in which he saw God's great work. "Boštík was deeply religious and was convinced that the creation itself transcends absolutely everything. The color layers in his vision enter the white space, so to speak, and control the whole space. And I have such a strange memory about it, that when I went - quite often - to Václav, I never dared to ask anything of him, but once I came and Václav had this painting ready and wrapped. And he simply told me that it is not easy with this painting, arm yourself , but this is what I prepared for you and I would like you to have it at home. Not so that you have something from me, but so that you have something to think about the universe and about the existence of humanity. So I took it, and so I think about it." Published: Šetlík, J., Vrba, T.: Jiří Šetlík: They accompany me through life. Museum of Art and Design Benešov, 2019. p. 21, 26, 30. VÁCLAV BOŠTÍK 1913 - 2005 - NEBULA OF DOTS

        Est: -

The abstract work of the painter and graphic artist Václav Boštík represents a minimalist turn towards the universal order of things. A nebula of dots fades and appears in space, emitting the light of a soft pastel corona. The work is a development of the author's tendencies from the 1960s, which continued until the 1990s. Boštík reduces the form, rids it of everything unimportant and uses basic means of expression. It manifests itself in geometric shapes, work with colored points, division of surfaces and high organization. Boštík is looking for an ideal, monochromatic work that contrasts with subjectivity. “If I had to briefly characterize my efforts, then I would say that I am looking for a lost paradise. I'm trying to find a way out of the labyrinth we live in and get close enough to paradise to at least catch a glimpse of it.” Technique: Pastel, paper, Signed: Lower center "Boštík"

        VÁCLAV BOŠTIK

        Est: CHF30,000 - CHF40,000

VÁCLAV BOŠTIK (Horní Újezd 1913 - 2005 Prague) Untitled. 1988. Oil on canvas. 50 x 50 cm. Provenance: - Purchased directly from the artist in 1989, private collection. - Auction Christie's, 5 june 2013. - Purchased from the above by the present owner, since then private collection Switzerland. Václav Boštík is one of the most important representatives of non-figurative painting in the Czech Republic in the 2nd half of the 20th century. He showed his abstract works for the first time in 1957 when artistic freedom in the country was officially under Communist censorship. In keeping with his modest nature, Václav Boštík regarded his artistic work as only part of his wider quest for knowledge. In keeping with this mindset, he also worked as a laboratory assistant and photographer in a research institute and spent five years of his life participating in the construction of a monument to the Jewish victims of National Socialism on the facade of the Pinkas-Synagoge. The mid 1960s saw Boštík‘s first paintings which examined the theme of the forcefield. Characteristic of this series is the cloudy composition, in the centre of which is a kind of energy cluster. In part, the aesthetic resembles that of Paul Klee or Mark Rothko. The incorporation of light as a defining pictorial element is a reference to Boštík’s deep Christian beliefs, and his interest in theological-philosophical questions. His expression is both spiritually and universally accessible at the same time. Václav Boštík was named Knight of the Order of the Arts and Letters by the French government in 1991. In 2004 he received the Medal of Merit from the President of the Czech Republic. His work is represented in international collections and above all is highly regarded in his country. --------------- VÁCLAV BOŠTIK (Horní Újezd 1913 - 2005 Prag) Ohne Titel. 1988. Öl auf Leinwand. 50 x 50 cm. Provenienz: - Vom Künstler 1989 direkt erworben, Privatsammlung. - Auktion Christie's 5 Juni 2013.
