Angel Botello Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Sculptor, b. 1913 - d. 1986

Angel Botello started his artistic training at the School of Art of Fernando Academy in Madrid when he was 22 years old. Angel Bottello's artwork encompasses the mediums of drawing, painting, and printmaking. Using both Impressionist and post-Impressionist techniques, he painted the landscapes and people of Haiti after moving there in 1944.

The most successful of Angel Botello's artworks were painted after he moved to Puerto Rico in 1953. He painted the local culture, native islanders, and girls sunning themselves. Angel Botello's prints from this time show his fascination with the bronzed women of the island and have an abstract feel. Some of Angel Bottello's art for sale includes bronze sculptures that he produced toward the end of his life in the 1980s. Angel Botello whose full name was Angel Botello y Barros was born in Galicia, Spain and worked in Haiti, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rican. A striking example of Botello's work mounted in a custom gold tone wooden frame. Size (image): 19.25" L x 17" W (48.9 cm x 43.2 cm) Size (frame): 30.7" L x 28.5" W (78 cm x 72.4 cm) About the artist: "Painter and sculptor, Angel Botello was born in 1913 in the small town of Cangas de Morrazo in Galicia, Spain. He moved to Bordeaux, France with his family in the 20's and lived there until 1935. While in France, Botello studied during four years at the School of Fine Arts where he graduated with honor. Then, he moved to Spain where he applied and was accepted at the School of Art of the San Fernando Academy. The civil war started which made him leave his studies and join the army as a cartographer. He eventually returned to France to meet with his family that was in a refugee camp. They decided to leave Europe and move to the Dominican Republic where he was warmly received. The community of Dominican artists included him as one of their own, and many of the paintings created at this time were presented at the 'Latin American Art Exposition' at the Riverside Museum in 1940. During that year, the Botello family traveled to Cuba where they stayed during eight months. Upon their return to Santo Domingo, his paintings were noted by the Peruvian ambassador there who invited Botello to show them in Port-au-Prince, Haití in 1944. There Botello met Christiane who became his wife. For ten years they lived in Haiti until the couple moved to San Juan, Puerto Rico. In 1953, they opened their first art gallery at the Caribe Hilton Hotel. Botello stated that the light and bright colors of the tropics opened a new world for him and stimulated his creativity. During the 1960's his work became more personal as it was enriched by his new and favorite theme of his three children. The deep love that he felt for his children and his family is reflected in his later work, paintings and sculptures. Botello spent the last decades of his life in Puerto Rico, always producing. It was this bright spirit of the islands that captured the artist until his death in 1986. He left behind a legacy of oil painting, linocuts, lithographs, silk screens and sculptures." Attributed to Angel Botello ( 1913-1986) oil on board abstract painting. Signed. Size: 29 3/4" x 25 3/4" framed, 24 1/2" x 19 5/8" unframed.Angel Botello was active/lived in Puerto Rico, Haiti, Spain.Angel Botello was born in Galica, Spain in 1913. As a young boy he and his family moved to Bordeaux, France, where he spent the majority of youth and studied painting at the School of Fine Arts. When he returned to Spain as a young man, Botello continued his studies in art until the beginning of the Spanish Civil War, at which time he joined the army to work as a cartographer. Before long, the Botello family decided to leave Europe and moved to the Dominican Republic. The Dominican art community warmly received Botello, treating him as one of their own. Throughout the next several years, Angel Botello traveled and lived throughout the Caribbean. In 1944 Botello was invited to show his paintings in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. It was in Haiti that he met his wife, Chritiane. The Botello couple lived in Haiti until the 1950s, at which time they moved to San Juan, Puerto Rico. It was in San Juan that the couple opened their first art gallery in the Caribe Hilton Hotel.Angel Botello's art was very much influenced by island culture. Despite the hardships and political trauma suffered by this country, Haiti is a highly spiritual country that provides a seemingly inexhaustible supply of creativity and imagination to many artists who have brought this spirit to life.Angel Botello said that the light and bright colors of the tropics opened a new world for him and stimulated his creativity. It was this bright spirit of the islands that captured the artist until his death in 1986. Botello spent the last decades of his life in Puerto Rico, always producing. He left behind a legacy of oil painting, linocuts, lithographs, silk screens and sculptures.~ . Detailed condition reports are not included in this catalog.
