Jan Both Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Etcher, b. 1610 - d. 1652

(b Utrecht, Netherlands, 1610; d 1652) Dutch Baroque painter and etcher. The son of a glass painter, Both is recorded as having been apprenticed, with his elder brother Andries, to Abraham Bloemaert in their native Utrecht, before proceeding to the Utrecht academie between 1634 and 1637. Jan went to Rome circa 1638 to join his brother Andries, but soon after his arrival he was propelled into the spotlight when he collaborated with Claude Lorrain on two large series of landscapes for the Buen Retiro Palace in Madrid, commissioned by Don Manuel de Moura, Marqués de Castel Rodrigo and ambassador to Philip IV, the first from 1638-39 and the second from 1640-41. Jan and Andries left Rome in 1641, traveling via Venice where Andries tragically drowned in a canal. Jan is believed to have returned home alone to Utrecht in the same year. Like Claude Lorrain, Both arranged his landscapes along diagonal lines in order to achieve a greater feeling of depth, unifying the composition by means of a glowing, golden light. Both specialized in genre scenes during his stay in Italy and after his return home he devoted himself to the enforcement of forest landscapes, described accurately in the foliage and trees and illuminated by a light golden twilight. The figures depicted in his paintings are frequently dressed in red smocks and sheepskin waistcoats, a recurring theme throughout his oeuvre. Both is known for pioneering the “Italianate” style found in 17th century Dutch landscape painting. Oil on panel cm. 44x50. Framed Of this uncommon view of Rome with the landing of boats at the port of Ripa Grande, Jan Both executed at least two versions: the one presented here and another, of similar size but developed in a more rectangular sense, preserved at the Städelsches Kunstinstitut in Frankfurt. The composition, apart from the slight difference in format, which causes differences concentrated essentially on the right side of the scene and on the sky track (more extensive and cloudy in our version), is very similar, with the same buildings and the same typical repertoire of wayfarers, vagabonds and peasants that always animates Jan Both's anti-aulic and pauperistic Rome.

Southern landscape with house near the water. Ca. 1640-1650. Brush in gray, washed in gray over an outline in black chalk. Framing lines in pen in black. Signed 'both jan (?)' at lower right. Watermarked fool's cap, Holland 1655, c.f. Heawood no. 1921, 1922. Provenance: Jean-Paul Meulemeester, Brussels, Inv. No.380, 8.11.1980 A comparable drawing in the same style without a signature but with an identical watermark in the collection of the Pierpont Morgan Library & Museum (inv. 2017.14) is attributed to Jan Both. Jan Both, like his brother and colleague Andries Both (1611-1642), spent some time working in Rome. There he became friends with the French artist Claude Lorrain (1600-1682), with whom, among other things, he collaborated on a series of paintings of landscapes. Everyday life in the streets of Rome is a frequent subject in his work. After returning to Utrecht (probably in 1642), he dedicated his time primarily to the depiction of Italian landscapes bathing in a warm, golden light. Although many landscape drawings are attributed to him, only a few sheets are signed, and this in various different manners. For this reason, it is difficult to verify the authenticity of this signature. Signé 'Both ...' en bas à droite. No.380, 8.11.1980 Collection privée Heverlee Comme son frère et collègue Andries Both, Jan Both a travaillé quelque temps à Rome. 2017.14) est également attribué à Jan Both. Ca. 1640-1650. Penseel in grijs, gewassen in grijs over een aanzet in zwart krijt. Kaderlijnen in pen in zwart. Getekend ‘Both ...' rechts onderaan. Watermerk zotskap, Holland 1655, c.f. Heawood nr. 1921, 1922. Herkomst: Jean-Paul Meulemeester, Brussel, Inv.

Both,  Dutch 1615-1652-  A wooded landscape with travellers crossing a ford;  oil on canvas, 71.9 x 92.2 cm.  Provenance:  David Garrick (1717-1779), London;  his posthumous sale, Christie's, London, 23 June 1823, lot 11, (95 gns, 11 shillings to Rutley).  T. Norris, near Manchester, by 1835.  Anon. sale, Chevallier and Féral, Paris, lot 4 (probably late 19th century; according to a page from an auction catalogue on the reverse).  with Galerie Sanct Lucas, Vienna, by summer 1962.  Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 17 December 2020, lot 230 (£18,750);    where acquired by the present owner.  Literature:  J. Smith, 'Supplement to the catalogue raisonné of the works of the most eminent Dutch, Flemish and French painters', London, IX, 1842, p.736, no.21. Jahrhunderts', Esslingen and Paris, 1926, IX, p.443, no.74.  Note:  Both is often lauded for his central role in the development of Italianate landscape painting in the 17th-century Netherlands. His approach was heavily shaped by his time in Rome, where he studied the landscapes of the Classical artist Claude Lorrain (c.1600-1682). His landscapes combine familiar figures and motifs to capture the warmth and light of Italy, and the present work is an especially fine example of his style. Indeed the subject of travellers on a path surrounded by tall trees and mountains was a favourite of Both's, and these elements, along with the contrast between the shadowy foreground and well-lit road, appear in several of his works (see for example 'Rocky landscape with ox-cart' at the National Gallery, London [NG1917]). Both was clearly a master of depicting light, with the warm, golden tone of the sky here gently highlighting the form of the figures in the landscape and contrasting with the darkness of the earth below. Indeed, apart from these spots of light these figures are almost indistinguishable from the environment around them, creating a sense of harmony between figures and the land which they inhabit. For further examples of the artists work, see Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam [no.C109]; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston [no.34.239]; Louvre, Paris [no.1065], and Statens Museum, Copenhagen [no.430].
