Wim Botha Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1974 -

Botha was born in Pretoria in 1974 and currently lives in Cape Town, South Africa. He grew up in a suburban town on the eastern side of Pretoria.[1] In 1996, Botha graduated from the University of Pretoria with a Bachelors in Visual Art. He has received the Helgaard Steyn Prize for sculpture in 2013, Standard Bank Young Artist Award 2005, and the Tollman Award 2003.[2]

Botha has found inspiration for his work in government texts and religious icons, objects that show belief, faith, observation, transgression and forgiveness.[3] Among the mediums he uses are treated wood, books, acrylic enamel paint, oil paint, steel, Indian ink, bronze, paper, and marble.[4]

The artist explains; “My works are a process of distillations...They attempt to reduce all-encompassing ideas and universal factors down to their core idea.” Exploring along the way “intercepting variables” and “patterns”[5]

Wim Botha SOUTH AFRICAN 1974- Afterimage signed and dated 07 mixed media 103,5 by 158cm E X H IB IT E D Stevenson, Cape Town, Wim Botha: Apocalagnosia, 11 January to 10 February 2007. Warren Siebrits, Johannesburg, The Rationalism of Nationalism, 2008. LITERATURE: Warren Siebrits (2008) The Rationalism of Nationalism (exhibition catalogue), Johannesburg: Warren Siebrits. Illustrated, unpaginated. This double-sided work features an incomplete rendering of South Africa’s old coat of arms (recto) and a ghostly study of a bird of prey (verso). First exhibited on Botha’s exhibition Apocalagnosia (2007), the recto image introduced audiences to his on-going method of partially depicting figurative subjects. Botha is well known for his appropriation, mimicry and distortion of religious and political iconography and art historical symbols. This extends to South Africa’s former coat of arms. Adopted in 1910 and replaced in 2000, this heraldic symbol featured a quartered shield flanked by a springbok and a gemsbok, with a lion at the crest, and a Latin motto below. Botha’s exhibition Speculum (2003) included two sculptural likenesses of this lapsed symbol, both made from white synthetic marble, as well as a number of works on paper that similarly portrayed its component elements as slowly diminishing. This lot radically progressed that dissolution: it only records aspects of the mantle, helm and crest of the coat of arms in delicate brushstrokes and pencil marks. The verso image was produced with coffee and water, and resembles Botha’s Watermark/Oilslick series (2003), spectral monotone paintings of various heraldic symbols. Sean O’Toole

Wim Botha (South African 1974-) UNTITLED (ECSTASY II) Afrikaans bibles, woo

        Est: R250,000 - R350,000

Wim Botha (South African 1974-) UNTITLED (ECSTASY II) Afrikaans bibles, wood and steel height: 56cm Wim Botha’s ECSTASY II was part of an exhibition held at Michael Stevenson in 2011 titled All This. The artist creates composite figurative sculptures often made from bibles, dictionaries, encyclopaedias and wood. This sculpture is only one example of an on-going evolution of paper busts for which Wim Botha is renowned. His works are more often obscure and steeped in connotation. Liese van der Watt (2005:5) notes that “despite the seeming accessibility of his vocabulary, interpretation (of Wim Botha’s artwork) is challenged by a radical act of translation and displacement that typically removes content from context and renders his work strange, ambiguous and only vaguely familiar”. The sculpture is suspended in space, fragmented and could almost be considered to be in a state of transfiguration. While the artwork does contain elements of traditional portraiture that may suggest some sort of rationalised identity, in this case, the artwork delivers nothing concrete and rather leaves the reader with a sense of flux and transition. His artworks often suggest concepts of weight and weightlessness, as he juxtaposes heavy paper and wood sculptures with polystyrene suspended in mid-air or mounted and grounded on plinths. Wim Botha was born in 1974. During his career so far he has presented a prolific amount of solo shows at Michael Stevenson, as well as participating in several group shows both locally and abroad. In 2010 he was awarded the commission for a public sculpture at the headquarters of Nedbank in Johannesburg, producing four monumental, abstracted trees constructed from metal and wood.
