Paul L. Bouchard (1853-1937), View Of Moscow Kremlin, c. 1900

        Est: €70,000 - €91,000

Oil on canvas, relined Paris/Russia, c. 1900 Paul Louis Bouchard (1853-1937) – French painter and romantic chronicler of Moscow Signed lower left ‘Bouchard’ The authenticity of the painting has been confirmed by the expert V. Petrov to the former owner Dimensions: 105.5 x 162.5 cm Frame: 143.5 x 200.5 cm Very good condition Exhibitions: Société des Artistes Français, Salon de 1901, Grand Palais, Paris 1901 (with exhibition stamp and gallery number verso on the stretcher) Literature: Catalogue Illustré du Salon de 1901, Librairie d’Art Ludovic Baschet, Paris 1901, p. 26, no. 256 (listed) Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 140,000 Euro This large-scale and monumental view of the Moscow Kremlin and the Church of Christ the Saviour is the work of one of the select few French landscape painters, who devoted their mature artistic output to the Russian capital. The painting is a classic example of Bouchard’s work and incorporates all the images that come into a person’s mind at the mention of Moscow: the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the red crenellated walls and towers of the Kremlin, the embankment of the Moscow River and the horses with bells, harnessed to a sleigh. Bouchard explored the city with his foreign eyes and presented it as a romantic and exotic place. Bouchard was thus able to rise to the level of gifted Russian artists such as Aleksey Savrasov, Nikolay Dubovskoy and Vladimir Makovsky. His pictures were regularly exhibited in the Paris Salon, where the present lot was shown in 1901. Condition: The painting is in very good condition, consistent with age. The canvas is relined and only shows small marks, where the frame has rubbed. Inspection under UV light reveals scattered areas of tiny retouchings, especially to the sky. The stretcher measures 105.5 x 162.5 cm and the frame 143.5 x 200.5 cm. Paul Louis Bouchard (1853-1937) Paul Louis Bouchard was a native from Paris and studied under Jules-Joseph Lefebvre (1836-1911) and Gustave Boulanger (1824-1888). He initially painted historical and figure scenes that captured the European Middle Ages. Bouchard’s mature works described however mostly Oriental and Russian themes that resulted in the artist’s fame. Masterpieces of Paul Louis Bouchard show many variations of the Kremlin, the Strastnoy Monastery and the Red Square in winter. BOUCHARD, PAUL LOUIS - (1853-1937) View of the Moscow Kremlin and the Church of Christ the Saviour

        Est: £120,000 - £180,000

BOUCHARD, PAUL LOUIS (1853-1937) View of the Moscow Kremlin and the Church of Christ the Saviour, signed. Oil on canvas, 105.5 by 162.5 cm. Authenticity of the work has been confirmed by the expert V. Petrov. Exhibited: Société des Artistes Français, Salon de 1901, Grand Palais, Paris, 1901 (exhibition stamp and gallery number on the stretcher). Literature: Catalogue Illustré du Salon de 1901, Paris, Librairie d'Art Ludovic Baschet, 1901, p. 26, No. 256, listed. View of the Moscow Kremlin and the Church of Christ the Saviour was painted by one of the select few French landscape painters to have devoted their mature creative energies to depicting the Russian capital. Parisian by birth, Paul Louis Bouchard was a pupil of Jules-Joseph Lefebvre and Gustave Boulanger and began his career with history painting and depictions of human figures, most often inspired by the European Middle Ages. Despite this early interest, the works that were to become Bouchard's most famous had Oriental and Russian themes. Among his masterpieces are such pictures as View of Moscow, at the Entrance to the Kremlin; Winter Morning on Malaya Dmitrovka, by the Gates of the Strastnoy Monastery and Red Square in Winter. View of the Moscow Kremlin and the Church of Christ the Saviour is a classic Bouchard work. In its distinctive composition the picture incorporates all the images that come into a person's mind at the mention of Moscow: the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour with its golden onion domes, the red crenellated walls and towers of the Kremlin, the embankment of the Moscow River edged in cast-iron railings and the horse with bells, harnessed to a sleigh. Despite the fact that Bouchard was seeing the city with foreign eyes as a romantic and exotic place, the view he had of Moscow and her atmosphere, remains near and dear. It was particularly his ability to capture the city's unique mood, to grasp the special qualities intrinsic to its image that allowed Bouchard to rise to the level of gifted Russian artists such as Aleksey Savrasov, Nikolay Dubovskoy and Vladimir Makovsky. His pictures were regularly accepted for exhibitions at the Salon in Paris, where the present lot was shown in 1901.
