MICHEL BOUCHAUD (DATES UNKNOWN) LA PLAGE DE MONTE CARLO. 1929. 45x29 1/4 inches, 114 1/4x74 1/4 cm. Publicité Vox, Paris. Condition A: minor abrasions in image. Matted and framed. A fashionable couple flirts at the confluence of the bay and a pool, beneath a decorative trellis, with the beaches and town in the distance. A highly stylized, delightful Art Deco image, from the woman's hair to the suggestion of waves in the water. Bouchaud is known to have designed one other poster, for Val d'Esquieres, another waterside resort, but a poster that is far less Art Deco than this scene. He was also a painter and illustrator and designed many album covers. Voyage p. 50, Riviera 214, Affiche Art Deco p. 103, Azur 369, Tourism 94.

    • La Plage de Monte Carlo. 1929.
      Jun. 26, 2018

La Plage de Monte Carlo. 1929.

      Est: $8,000 - $10,000

ARTIST: MICHEL BOUCHAUD (1902-1965) SIZE: 31 1/4 x 47 1/8 in./79.5 x 119.7 cm PRINTER: Publicite Vox DESCRIPTION: Beach scenes in true Art Deco style are uncommon – and this is one of the best. It's just one of three posters created by Michel Bouchaud. After his military service, he asked to be demobilized in Algeria, where he joined his brother at Villa Abd-el-Tif and discovered the Mediterranean light. Returning to Paris, he worked on behalf of perfumers, chocolatiers, designers, and jewelers. His work normally concentrated on a smaller, more experiential scale: barrels of Rum Négrita, record covers, etc. The totality of the Art Deco infusion in this poster is redolent of his will toward artistic immersion in experience. (Travel: Europe; Art Deco)

    • Val d'Esquieres.
      May. 04, 2008

      Val d'Esquieres.

      Est: $2,500 - $3,000

Val d'Esquieres. The blocky colors look childlike; the maplike depiction of the Cote d'Azur resort, almost primitive; the perspective, as casual as a summer holiday. But this artful naivete overlies a sophisticated design: the lines of the allee and dock converge on the figure of the lifeguard, from which the eye follows the ladder down to the raft and the kayak, all in one easy sweep. Charm and efficiency-like a good resort hotel. Little is known of Bouchaud; among his few posters, his smashing Art Deco image of the bathers at "La Plage de Monte Carlo" (see PAI-XLV, 169) is the best known. MICHEL BOUCHAUD
