        oil on canvas, within a coeval frame 92 x 83.5 cm signed and dated lower left Bouchet / 1801 L’opera, firmata e datata 1801, risulta inedita e trova affinità compositive con ritratti realizzati da Bouchet per il suo amico pittore Hector Isabey e per i suoi figli qualche anno più tardi, di cui la tela in esame condivide anche la medesima atmosfera intima e familiare di singolare efficacia. Louis André Gabriel Bouchet si formò all’Ècole de Beaux-Arts sotto l’egida di Jacques-Louis David che ne influenzò sensibilmente lo stile e si specializzò in dipinti di storia e in ritratti. Nel 1807 a coronamento della sua carriera ottenne da Napoleone il prestigioso incarico di realizzarne il ritratto a figura intera, en pendant con quello dell’imperatrice Joséphine eseguito da Robert Lefèvre due anni prima per la città di Acquisgrana. Nel 1797 vinse il Prix de Rome ed espose al Salon di Parigi fino al 1819. Fu padre e maestro dell’architetto Jules-Frédéric, di cui una piccola e scelta raccolta di opere, insieme al ritratto nel lotto, passò in eredità ad un ramo italiano della famiglia Bouchet e per successione è giunta agli attuali proprietari.

Louis-Andre-Gabriel Bouchet (1759 – 7 July 1842) was a French historical painter and a pupil of Jacques-Louis David. He painted subjects from sacred and profane history, poetry, and portraits.         Louis-André Gabriel BOUCHET ( Paris 1759 - 1842) Portrait de Simon Turin Toile 147 x 115 cm Signé et daté en bas à droite: Bouchet-1822 Petits accident en bas vers la droite, restaurations anciennes Provenance : famille Maupassant Elève de David, Bouchet remporte le Prix de Rome en 1797. Auteur de scènes d'histoire, il est l'un des plus importants portraitistes sous la Restauration (portrait de Louis XVIII en costume de sacre, musée Granet, Aix-en-Provence ; Charles Henri de Ver-Huel, Château de Versailles) Notre toile présente le modèle en redingote, des lunettes pince-nez accrochées à la boutonnière, en jeune dessinateur tenant son carnet à dessin. Evoquant les portraits du Grand Tour en extérieur, il est placé devant un bord la mer, où l'on voit bateau s'éloigner, L'un des livres, négligemment posé dans son haut-de-forme à gauche, porte le titre voyage. Son air dilettante et dandy lui donne un aspect romantique, qui évoque l'influence des portraits élégants de Thomas Lawrence, très admiré à cette date.
