Eugène Boudin Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Engraver, b. 1824 - d. 1898

Artist Eugene Boudin studied in Paris, and is most known for his seascapes that emphasized the beauty of natural light reflecting on the water. One of his first jobs was working in an art shop where Claude Monet displayed his paintings, and he would often give Boudin advice. Artist Eugene Boudin received his big break in 1888 after the French government purchased some of his paintings to place in the Luxembourg Gallery. He enjoyed painting while in nature, and Eugene Boudin's paintings often contained information on the weather, light, location, and time of day on the backs. Beach scenes with pale blue water and rolling waves were popular themes in Eugene Boudin's artwork. Take your own leisurely voyage by purchasing a mesmerizing seascape painting onlinto add nautical style to your gallery.

Eugene Louis Boudin (France, 1824 - 1898) "Trouville, Scene de Plage" Oil on Board. Signed lower right. Inscribed 'Trouville 74' lower left. This painting has never before been offered for auction. Provenance: Ferdinand Bocquet (Paris); Deprez (Paris); Purchased from Knoedler Galleries (1969) for $100,000 by Descendants of Francis Luis Mora; By descent to current family member Literature: R. Schmit, Eugene Boudin, Paris, 1973, vol. I, p. 335, no. 939 (illustrated). We want to personally thank Ms Emma Jackson at the Hirsch Library at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston for her assistance confirming this listing. Board Size: 6.5 x 14 1/8 in. (16.7 x 35.5 cm) Overall Framed Size: 11.5 x 19 in. Trouville, situated at the mouth of the river Touques in Normandy, was a small village that became a fashionable and elegant summer retreat for both Parisians and English visitors alike during the 1820s. From the 1860s through the 1890s, Boudin traveled to Trouville every year, painting the beach scenes for which he is best known. Boudin often dedicated half of his canvases to an expansive, cloud-filled sky. As Gustave Courbet, exclaimed, ''My God, you are a seraph, Boudin! You are the only one of us who really knows the sky'' Boudin often worked on location, believing that "Everything that is painted on the spot has always a strength, a power, a vividness of touch that one doesn't find again in one's studio" (quoted in Yann Le Pichon, The Real World of the Impressionists, New York, 1983, p. 79). This approach to painting was, at the time, revolutionary. Claude Monet responded to Boudin's methodology and was soon joining the artist on the beaches of Trouville. After meeting Boudin in Le Havre in the late 1850s, Monet wrote "My eyes were really opened and I finally understood Nature. I learned at the same time to love it" (Quoted in Maria Costantino, The Impressionists, Secaucus, 1993, p. 39). Boudin's lessons in spontaneity inspired Monet and many artists of the younger generation to continue painting, not only sketching, en plein air and to pursue their interest in painting "impressions" of nature, using looser brush strokes and luminous tonalities. Boudin has long been considered among the most influential figures to the Impressionists.

Provenienz: Sammlung Elias Martin Hardie. Galerie Colnaghi, London. EUGÈNE LOUIS BOUDIN (Honfleur 1824–1898 Deauville) Trouville. Rentrée des barques de pêche. 1896. Oil on panel. Signed and dated lower left: E. Boudin / 96. Entitled verso: Rentrée des barques de pêche / à Trouville. 27 × 21.7 cm. Provenance: - With Galerie Raphael Girard, Paris. - Private collection, Monaco. - Private collection, Switzerland. - Sale, Honfleur Enchères, Honfleur, 1.1.2015, Lot 17. - Private collection, France. - Sale Hôtel des ventes de la Seine, Rouen, 19.5.2022, Lot 55. - Private collection, Paris, acquired at the above auction. Literature: Robert Schmit: Eugène Boudin. 1824–1898, Paris 1973, vol. 3, p. 365, no. 3574 (with ill.). It is not surprising that Eugène Boudin was drawn to the ports and coasts of Normandy, as he was the son of a sailor, born in Honfleur. As an artist, he was deeply interested in the portrayal of light and atmospheric effects and was one of the first to paint “en plein air”, directly in front of his subject. This method enabled him to give his works a vibrant immediacy and liveliness. He had a consequential influence on the Impressionists, especially on Claude Monet, whom he urged to paint out-of-doors. From 1863 onwards, Boudin travelled to Trouville each summer. There he found inspiration for his many variations on beach and port scenes, as in the case of this wonderful work, where the fishermen return to port with their boats. * The full tax is charged on this item marked * in the auction catalogue, i.e. VAT is charged on the sum of the bid price plus the surcharge for those items.

EUGENE LOUIS BOUDIN (1824-1898) OIL ON PANEL

            Est: $3,500 - $4,000

Eugene Louis Boudin (1824-1898) Original Oil on Panel "Plage a Trouville". Unsigned Purchased from well-respected art and antique dealer Olivier d'Ythurbide et Benoit Fauquenot in Paris. In frame 8.75""x7.5""x 1"". Weight 1 lb.. Gilt frame with linen liner. Eugene Boudin, the son of a ship's captain, was born on the coast at Honfleur in Normandy in 1824. He thus became familiar with the moods and atmosphere of the sea, which, along with the Normandy countryside, was the artist's main subject matter. As a young man in Le Havre, Boudin worked with a stationer and framer who displayed paintings by visiting artists, circumstances that allowed the young man to meet established painters such as Theodule Ribot, Eugene Isabey and Constant Troyon, among others. With advice and encouragement from these important painters, Boudin embarked on his own artistic career, eventually winning a grant in 1851 from the city of Le Havre to study painting in Paris for three years. During this time, he did a great deal of work outdoors. When Boudin returned to Le Havre, he embarked seriously on a career of Marine painting. He traveled extensively in the area, painting scenes along the entire Atlantic coast, from Holland to Bordeaux. At an exhibition of the Societe des Amis des Arts du Havre in 1958, Boudin met Claude Monet to whom he stressed the importance of working directly from nature. He became a frequent Salon exhibitor, winning a third-place medal in 1881 and a Gold Medal in 1889 at the Exposition Universelle. Three years later he was made a knight of the Legion of Honor. Two years earlier, Boudin met Claude Monet, who then worked with Boudin in his studio and became a life-long friend. In 1874, Boudin joined Monet and other Impressionists in the first exhibition of works in that style. At the end of his life he also worked on the French Riviera. By 1859 he had achieved a style in the rendering of skies that henceforth excited the admiration of artists and critics, leading to Courbet to call him a ""seraph"", and to Corot to coin the epithet "king of the skies".

II, no. 1542 (illustrated in black and white)This work is recorded in the Archives Eugène Boudin at Galerie Brame & Lorenceau. The Normandy coast was a favourite subject matter of Eugene Boudin. Having grown up in Honfleur and then Le Havre, he was familiar with the many seaside towns which became increasingly popular with fashionable Parisians wanting to escape the crowded city. Boudin's first depictions of Trouville date from the early 1860s. Encouraged by his friend Johan Barthold Jongkind, he is one of the first artists to practice plein air painting and is credited by his life-long friend, Claude Monet, as being instrumental in his early development as an artist. The present work, painted in 1881, typifies Boudin's approach to landscape painting with its quintessential brooding skies filled with energy and movement. An excerpt from his diary in 1856, demonstrates that, even as a young artist honing his craft, the sky was paramount to his art.'To swim in the open sky. To achieve the tenderness of clouds. To suspend these masses in the distance, very far away in the grey mist, make the blue explode. I feel all this coming, dawning in my intentions. What joy and what torment!'Corot was so impressed with Boudin's ability to depict the sky that he called him 'King of the Skies'. His preoccupation with the sky meant that, as with the current work, it frequently occupied more than half the composition. In referencing the time of day in the title of the work, Boudin reveals his enduring interest in the subtleties of light and weather at different times of the day and in different seasons, often noting exact atmospheric conditions at the time of painting.Unlike Boudin's many depictions of Trouville as a fashionable resort, the present work belongs to a body of work that focusses on the port, devoid of the groups of stylish visitors that are frequently at the centre of the artist's work. Instead Trouville, Le Port, Le Matin is an exemplary study of the play of light through the clouds onto the water, an example of Boudin's mature impressionistic style.
