    • Soulac-Sur-Mer. 1909.
      Oct. 27, 2019

      Soulac-Sur-Mer. 1909.

      Est: $1,400 - $1,700

ARTIST: ANDRÉ BOUDON SIZE: 29 1/8 x 40 1/4 in./74 x 102.3 cm PRINTER: Affiches F. Pech, Bordeaux DESCRIPTION: At the dawn of the 20th century, women reached a milestone: the ability to wear formfitting swimsuits that allowed for proper swimming. Our lass here demonstrates a quite riveting cut, though it would be another year before women were legally able to show their legs and shoulders at the beach. Soulac-sur-Mer is a seaside resort in Bordeaux that offers plenty of beach attractions as well as historic landmarks, as demarcated here: the Soulac Abbey, which replaced a 12th century monastery, and the Cordouan Lighthouse, built in 1611. France's oldest lighthouse is still active today, and remains the world's tenth-tallest traditional lighthouse at 223 feet. (Art Nouveau; Travel; Trains)

      Soulac-sur-Mer. ca. 1895.

      Est: $1,700 - $2,000

ARTIST: ANDRÉ BOUDON SIZE: 29 x 39 1/2 in./73.7 x 100.3 cm PRINTER: Imp. J. Bière, Bordeaux DESCRIPTION: While undated, those bathing outfits scream of the late 19th century—especially the lady's yellow number with the stripes. The same may be said for the fancy border and the custom of putting vignettes around the perimeter to depict local sights. It's a classic Art Nouveau travel poster.
