        [BRADY, Mathew (1822-1896), photographer]. Pair of Albumen Prints of Grant and His Staff at Their Field Headquarters at City Point, VA. [Hartford, Conn: Taylor and Huntington, ca. 1864]. Prints of Grant and his staff at City Point, taken directly from negatives of photos shot by Brady and Alex Gardner. Prints mounted onto Taylor and Huntington’s decorative mounts, with their printed catalogue on versos. Prints approximately 5 ¼ x 8 ¼”. Mounts approximately 9 x 11”. A bit toned, photos with small manuscript notes below the images (“Grant” and “Grant / Barker [beneath crossed out manuscript note]”), minor rubbing to mounts, one photo with a small marginal chip at left margin. Fine. During the Petersburg campaign, Grant and his staff lived in tents on the property of Dr. Richard Eppes; it was at this location that Grant directed most of the action in the final phase of the Civil War.

        Mathew Brady photograph from his "Incidents of the War" series captioned "Camp McDowell, 8th Reg't N.Y.S.M. Arlington Heights, Va." Albumen photograph, 11" H x 14.5" on paper mount. Written in pencil on the lower right side of the image "John Wilson, Affectionate regards, David W. Wilson." History: The 8th New York State Militia, known as "The Washington Greys" were mustered in New York City on April 23, 1861 under the command of Colonel George Lyons. After being stationed briefly in Baltimore, it was assigned duty at General Irvin McDowell's HQ on Arlington Heights until 1st Bull Run, where the regiment suffered 8 killed, 17 wounded, and 13 captured. The unit mustered out on July 24, 1861.

        MATHEW BRADY (1822-1896) Portrait of President Andrew Johnson. Albumen print, the image measuring 7 7/8x5 3/4 inches (20x14.6 cm.), the mount 11 1/2x9 1/2 inches (29.2x24.1 cm.), with a canceled stamp on mount verso. 1865 Starting as a maker of daguerreotype cases, Brady became the most famous photographer of his day. He opened his own studio in New York in 1844, exhibiting portraits of famous Americans. Brady's documentation of the Civil War is considered the birth of modern photojournalism. He photographed 18 of the 19 American Presidents between John Quincy Adams and William McKinley. Andrew Johnson became the 17th President after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. A Southern sympathizer, Johnson's tenure was marked with controversy and failure, and he became the first president to be impeached in 1868.
