Demolition of the Antwerp city walls with the Begijnenpoort in front and the Sint-Jorispoort in back, October 1864. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated ‘De Braekeleer 1864’. In the second half of the 19th century, the Antwerp fortification lost its protective function and inhibited the expansion of the growing city. In 1864 the demolition began. Afterwards, a wide boulevard, the Leien, was built on top the filled-in moats. The Begijnenpoort was located on today's Kasteelpleinstraat at the intersection with the Amerikalei. In the background we see the more lavishly decorated Sint-Jorispoort. A photograph by Florent Joostens from October 1864, depicts the demolition works of this gate at a similar stage (cf. Ronny van de Velde (ed.) and Jan Ceuleers, 'Antwerp. Lost City 1860-1880'. Ronny Van de Velde-Ludion, 2016, ill. 24). In his composition, Ferdinand de Braekeleer shortens the actual distance between the two entrance gates in order to represent them in one image. In reality, it would be almost impossible to perceive both gates in one glance. Possibly De Braekeleer wanted to underline the grandeur of the demolition works with this somewhat inventive image.

        Est: €3,500 - €3,700

FERDINAND DE BRAEKELEER THE OLD (Belgium, 1792-1883). "A well-deserved rest after a long day's work". Oil on panel. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 56 x 65 cm; 78 x 87 x 9 cm (frame). The impish subject that portrays this painting and the spontaneous treatment that is granted to him are characteristic of the painting that was developed in the Netherlands in the XVII and XVIII centuries. A young man tries to flirt with a girl wearing a bonnet, taking advantage of the fact that her father has fallen asleep. The freshness of the gestures and countenances is combined with an attentive description of each of the objects inside, paying attention to the food on the table. The scene takes place in the warmth of the fireplace, next to which the old man sleeps peacefully after a sumptuous meal. At his feet, the cat gazes in wonder at the glowing embers. Ferdinand Henri Jean de Braekeleer is part of a family of Flemish painters from Antwerp that has many members, which can sometimes lead to confusion in attributions. In fact, he is the eldest son of Ferdinand de Braekeleer (known as the Old Man), the brother of Henri de Braekeleer (1840-1888), was the most prominent painter in the family. Following in the aesthetic wake of his family, The Younger, he produced genre scenes in the Flemish style of past centuries, such as the small canvas Family. He also painted 17th century interiors, portraits and views of the city. He participated in the Antwerp Salon of 1849. In 1852 he founded a gallery in New York where he sold the works of the Belgian school, the Belgian Painting and Statuary Gallery. In New York he exhibited in 1853 at the National Academy of Design a painting entitled Le plunder1. Ill, he returned to Antwerp to die there.

Ferdinand de Braekeleer: The Exit of the Bridal Couple

        Est: €10,000 - €20,000

BRAEKELEER, FERDINAND DE Antwerpen 1792 - 1883 Title: The Exit of the Bridal Couple. Date: 1866. Technique: Oil on canvas. Mounting: Relined. Measurement: 79 x 112cm. Notation: Signed and dated lower left: Ferdinand de Braekeleer / Antwerpen 1866. Frame: Framed. Provenance: Private ownership, Germany. There are people in this masterful painting by Ferdinand de Braekeleer, which the renowned genre artist created in 1866. The artist first learned the craft as a pupil of the Belgian painter Mathieu Ignace van Bree before being accepted at the Royal Academy in Antwerp. No doubt to his displeasure, he was not counted among the moderns of art at the Paris Salon of 1836 because of his backward-looking style, but he received an honour for a historical subject at the same Salon three years later. Around the bridal couple standing in the centre, the wedding party has gathered outside in front of the house. The horse-drawn carriage, adorned with flowers, is ready to depart for their life together. As they leave, the well-dressed groom gently clasps the hand of his beautiful young bride. Tentatively and lost in thought, however, she seems to pause for a brief moment in the circle of her family. In a gesture of uncertainty, she grasps the lace-trimmed hem of her white apron. But it is not only she who finds it visibly difficult to say goodbye. While the father, leaning upright on a stick and maintaining his posture, gazes wistfully into the distance, the mother leans towards her disappearing daughter and touches her lovingly on the arm. Her inner world of feelings and thoughts is revealed by the look in her alert eyes: Farewell my child, take good care of yourself. The expressions of some of the bystanders, however, can be interpreted in a completely different way. In addition to the young men toasting the bride and groom, a maid can be seen in the left foreground drying her teary eyes with her apron. Is she possibly mourning the end of a secret love? The angry gaze of the young man with the hat in the centre, fixed on his newlywed husband, can be interpreted in a similar direction. One man's happiness is another man's misfortune! De Braekeleer, whose paintings breathe the spirit of 17th century Dutch and Flemish painting, succeeds wonderfully in the present picture in illuminating the different emotions of his silent protagonists on the canvas and embedding them in a lively anecdotal narrative of love and farewell.
