          Est: €300 - €400

Gelatin silver print, printed in 1986 by Carlo Ludovico Bragaglia cm 23,8 x 17,8 (cm 8,9 x 12,4 picture) | 9.4 x 7 in. (3.5 x 4.9 in. picture) Edition 2 of 12 Numbered and titled in pencil by Carlo Ludovico Bragaglia on the white inferior recto margin The Bragaglia brothers devoted themselves to the same extent and with the same passion to futurist research and cinema. These two images, so different from each other, clearly illustrate the (apparent) extremes of their interests: how rigorous, classic, linear is the portrait of the director Alessandro Blasetti, who also has something unusual in his gaze, how provocative, 'dirty', disorienting is the one that alludes to the vigour that had to go through the photography of the present for those daring innovators like an electric shock.

          ANTON GIULIO BRAGAGLIA (1890–1960)

          Est: €30,000 - €40,000

ANTON GIULIO BRAGAGLIA (1890–1960)| 'Lo Schiaffo' (The Slap), photodynamic, Rome 1912 Image Size: 16 x 22,6 cm English: Vintage silver print, sepia-toned, double-weight matte paper, mounted on original cardboard 34,5 x 31 cm, in excellent condition. Original wooden frame. Photographer's handwritten signature "Bragaglia ROMA" in ink in the image at lower left, his pictorial name stamp in blue ink on the reverse of the print, his label "Servizio Fotografico del teatro degli indipendenti, Via Avignonesi N. 8, Roma 104" on the reverse of the mount. PROVENANCE Acquired by the actual owner from estate of Luigi Freddi (1895–1977), founder of the "Centro Sperimentale di cinematografia" and "Cinecittà" in Rome, where Bragaglia worked. LITERATURE Anton Giulio Bragaglia, Fotodinamismo Futurista, Torino 1970, ill. 6; Giovanni Lista, Fotografia Futurista, Milan 2015, p. 22. In 1910, Anton Giulio Bragaglia, together with his younger brother Arturo, began to develop a photographic technique to capture sequences of movement in long exposures, the futuristic "Fotodinamismo". This was not about an analysis of movement (as with Marey's chronophotography), but about doing justice to the aesthetic value of the trace of movement. The aim was to show the oscillations of the 'élan vital' as a dynamic flow, as it is invisible in perception. In "The Slap" this concerns both the gesture of the lunger and the fall of the slapped. In the founding manifesto of Futurism in 1909, Marinetti had praised the slap in addition to the fist - as a polemic-provocative attack on the "thought-heavy immobility of traditional art". Bragaglia's original print is a rare collector's item from an Italian private collection and has museum quality as a central work of Futurist photography. Deutsch: Vintage-Silbergelatineabzug auf mattem, sepia-getontem "double-weight" Papier, montiert am originalen Untersatzkarton 34,5 x 31 cm, in ausgezeichnetem Zustand. Originaler Holzrahmen.

(pictures in differet sizes) Edition 5 of 12 Each one numbered and signed by Carlo Ludovico Bragaglia on the white inferior recto margin The Futurist Photodinamism portfolio, housed in an elegant cardboard container covered with polychrome Japanese rice paper, has an important historical value because it tells, in seventeen sepia-tinted black and white images inserted in as many acid-free passepartouts, the story of Futurist Photodinamism as it was conceived by the Bragaglia brothers. Theorised by Anton Giulio Bragaglia, who also did not know how to photograph, in the volume 'Fotodinamismo futurista' (Nalato editor, Rome, 1911) that published them for the first time, the photographs were taken by Arturo and Carlo Ludovico. The latter signed and supervised the reprints for this portfolio that was planned for 12 copies but was actually realised in 9. It is accompanied by original documentation by Carlo Ludovico Bragaglia.

ANTON GIULIO BRAGAGLIA (1890–1960) | ‘The Cellist’, 1913 | Vintage silver print, sepia-toned, double-weight semi-matte paper on the original cardboard 34,5 x 31 cm, in excellent condition 16,9 x 19,2 cm Photographer’s handwritten signature “Bragaglia ROMA” in the image lower left, his pictorial name stamp in green ink on the reverse of the print, label “Servizio Fotografico del teatro degli indipendenti, Via Avignonesi N. 8, Roma 104” on the reverse of the original mount LITERATURE Norbert Nobis (ed.), Der Lärm der Straße. Italienischer Futurismus 1909–1918, cat. Sprengel Museum Hannover 2001, p. 315. Towards the end of 1910, Anton Giulio Bragaglia and his younger brother Arturo began to develop a photographic technique aimed at capturing sequences of movement in long exposures. Shortly afterwards, he published the corresponding theory in a groundbreaking manifesto: as a contribution to the Futurist avant-garde, ‘Fotodinamismo’ was not intended to analyse movement (like Marey's chronophotography or Muybridge's multiple exposures), but to do justice to the aesthetic value of the trace of movement and thus record vibrations that are not visible in the perception of real processes. With the depiction of a cellist playing, he also refers to music, and thus to a performative form of expression that was of eminent interest to Futurism. The original print of museum significance is a rare collector’s item from a private Italian collection.
