Theodor De Bry's Map of Southeast Asia / Philippines - One of the Rarest Early Maps of the East Indies

DE BRY, Theodor (1528-1598). [Southeast Asia - Philippines]. Engraved map. Frankfurt, 1619. 14” x 12 1/2” sheet. Provenance: Sion College. One of the Rarest Early Maps of the East Indies Theodor de Bry's 1619 map of East Indies, published posthumously by his sons in Part XI of the Grands Voyages, offers a detailed depiction of the East Indies and the Philippines. The map provides an excellent early depiction of the region, with noteworthy treatments of the Philippines, Sumatra, Java, Borneo, and the southern part of the Malay Peninsula. De Bry's map was in part based upon Jan Huygen van Linschoten's 1595 chart but introduces significant refinements, most notably information drawn from the circumnavigations of William Cornelisz Schouten 1615-17 and Joris Van Spilbergen, which had only just been reported in Europe. Notably, de Bry's representation of Java is narrower than in earlier maps, accurately positioning the island of Madura and marking the city of Mataram in Central Java for the first time. Sumatra's coastline and inland topography are also rendered with enhanced precision, indicating advancements in cartographic knowledge. The improved accuracy in the depiction of Java and Sumatra, along with the inclusion of previously uncharted locations, reflects the evolving understanding of Southeast Asian geography in the early 17th century. A similar version of the map was published in 1645-46 in Isaac Commelin's Begin ende Voortgangh van de Vereenighde Nederlantsche Geoctroyeerde Oost-Indische Compagnie and later reissued in the early 18th Century by Réne Augustin Constantin de Renneville, in his Recueil des Voiages . . . The map appeared in Theodor de Bry's exceptionally 1619 German and Latin editions of Part XI ('The Circumnavigations of William Cornelisz Schouten 1615-17 and Joris Van Spilbergen') of the Grands Voyages.

This enthralling engraving is from Theodor De Bry's significant historical work Grands Voyages. This from the first edition, Latin issue with this particular engraving being published in Frankfurt between 1590 and 1592 for de Bry by Sigismund Feyerabend. Grands Voyages is considered one of the most remarkable collections of voyages published in the Age of Discovery. Theodor de Bry (1528-1598) was a prominent Flemish engraver and publisher. He came from a family of jewelers and engravers, and faced persecution for his Lutheran faith during the Spanish Inquisition. De Bry would be most known for his engravings of the New World from Grands Voyages, a work which would reach 30 volumes in scope. He was inspired to create this work after meeting Richard Hakluyt in 1587, who had published his own collection of voyages. Four (4) hand colored copperplate engravings of 16th century Native Americans of Colonial Florida and Virginia attributed to Theodor de Bry, c. 1591. Scenes include: Timucua Natives Collecting Gold in the Streams and Timuca Natives Gathering Food and Smoking Meat; The Chickahominy Become New Englishmen; and The Abduction of Pocahontas. All matted and framed under glass in differing giltwood frames. All have approximate sight dimensions of 5 1/2" H x 7 1/2" W and framed dimensions of 9 1/2" H x 11 1/2" W. Note: In 1591 Dutch engraver and goldsmith Theodor de Bry published GRAND VOYAGES, which contained the earliest known European images of Native Americans in what is now Florida, Northern Georgia, and Virginia. The book gave many Europeans their first ever visual impression of the landscapes and indigenous people of "the New World." De Bry never actually visited North America; his images were actually based on drawings by John White, an English artist who accompanied expeditions to Virginia, and Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues, who was part of the French expeditions to Florida in 1562 and 1564. This significant, historic volume is Theodor de Bry & Jacques Le Moyne's Brevis Narratio eorum quae in florida Americae provi[n]cia Gallis acciderunt ... quae est seconda pars Americae. It is the second part or volume of Grands Voyages which is considered one of the most remarkable collections of voyages published in the Age of Discovery. The work was published in Frankfurt by Theodor de Bry. The work began publishing in 1590 with this volume printed 1609. The work includes engraved title, dedication leaf with engraved coat-of-arms, large hand-colored engraving of Noah's Ark, hand-colored section title, letterpress title (dated 1609), folding engraved map of Florida, 42 leaves with 1/2 page engraved illustration and text to page printed on recto only. The work is bound in modern morocco gilt. This is one of the most important volumes published on early North America. It features Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues's illustrations of Native Americans. The work described the earliest French settlements that would become the United States. The illustrations were after watercolors drawn first hand in the New World by Le Moyne on the mid-1560s expedition led by Jean Ribault and René Goulaine de Laudonnière. His illustrations of the Florida Indians are some of the most important visual records of American Indians and their culture before the 19th century. It also features one of the most important published maps of Florida. The map was first printed with this text and one of the most detailed of the Florida peninsula available before the 16th century. John Matthew Baxter describes it as "...the most remarkable and important map, which has been preserved from the sixteenth century maps, of that part of the East Coast which lies between Cape Hatteras and Cape Florida ... The map, engraved after John White, is "one of the most significant cartographical milestones in colonial North American history, [and] the most accurate map drawn in the sixteenth century of any part of that continent" (Burden). White and the scientist and surveyor Thomas Hariot had both accompanied Sir Richard Grenville's original Virginia expedition in 1585. White became governor of the second colony there. Forced to return to England for supplies, White was delayed by the war with Spain: when he finally returned to Virginia in 1590, the colony had vanished. Latin text describing the engravings: leaving Lisbon and passage in Asilah, where they captured a merchant ship, before heading to Madeira. Dim. page: 34.5x24.5 cm. Note: early and rare engraving from Lisbon and Asilah, depicting departure de Hans Staden (ca.1525-ca. 1576) to Brasil. Staden was a German soldier and explorer from mid-16th century. He did two voyages to Brazil (1546-1548 e 1549-1555). The works of Theodore de Bry, in particular "Les Grand Voyages", circulated widely in Europe in the late 16th century and early 17th century and its engravings contributed for the European knowledge of America and its inhabitants.
