          Jul. 18, 2023

          “Firebird” & “Petrushka.” 1983.

          Est: $8,000 - $10,000

ARTIST: BORIS BUĆAN (1947-2023) SIZE: 76 1/2 x in./194.2 x cm PRINTER: Bućan Sitotisak Studio, Zagrev DESCRIPTION: This spectacular six-sheet silk-screened Bućan graphic conjuring was utilized by the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb to promote their 1983 productions of Stravinsky’s “The Firebird” and “Petrushka.” The poster, described by the editors of “The Power of the Poster” as “a stunningly original creation” (p. 67), is at once bizarre, enthralling, and sumptuous. In all, it’s a perfect design for the mythic flights of fancy undertaken by the Stravinsky ballets. It’s also an amazing study in contrasting geometry and stark coloring, though it’s difficult to pin down precisely what effect Bućan meant to achieve with his androgynous, vaguely Egyptian avian creature poised atop red sling-back pumps. Obviously one associates it with “The Firebird,” but it’s more austere than fiery, and there isn’t a trace of “Petrushka’s” puppetry. But it is unquestionably provocative, and when the issue is attracting the attention of harried commuters, perhaps provocation is more than enough. This poster is hand-signed. ARTIST: BORIS BUĆAN (1947- ) SIZE: 76 5/8 x 79 1/2 in./194.6 x 202 cm DESCRIPTION: For a performance by the Zagreb Symphony Orchestra and RTV Zagreb Choir, Bućan conjures a phantasmagoric scene of monstera plants, birds, toys, and vinyl records floating through space. Bućan created posters for the Zagreb Symphony from 1983 to 1991, always exploring the visual representation of music with a sense of play and exploration. This is a six-sheet silkscreen poster. ARTIST: BORIS BUĆAN (1947- ) SIZE: 76 7/8 x 80 1/8 in./195.2 x 203.5 cm DESCRIPTION: Bućan rarely produced posters for American companies, but for the Hollybush Opera Festival in Glassboro, New Jersey, he contributed this wonderful, autumnal design plus three more images for the event. The Glassboro State College also hosted an exhibition of Bućan’s posters. This is a six-sheet poster. (Contemporary; Opera)

          Nikola Šubić Zrinjski. 1983.

          Est: $4,000 - $5,000

ARTIST: BORIS BUĆAN (1947- ) SIZE: 77 1/4 x 80 in./196.2 x 203.4 cm DESCRIPTION: The opera Nikola Šubić Zrinjski was written and composed by Ivan Zajc in 1876; it recounts the Battle of Szigetvár in 1566, when Croatian nobleman Nikola IV Zrinski heroically stood up to the powerful Ottoman forces. Although the effort ultimately failed, the story remains a patriotic symbol for Croatia, and the opera continues to enjoy performances globally. Here, for its performance at the Croatian National Theatre in Split, Bućan creates en elaborate announcement that centers on Nikola’s heroism. This is a six-sheet silkscreen print. It’s a little bit salacious and very much humorous. This is a silkscreen poster. (Contemporary; Exhibitions)

        • Aida. 1984.

          Aida. 1984.

          Est: $4,000 - $5,000

ARTIST: BORIS BUĆAN (1947- ) SIZE: 76 1/2 x 79 1/2 in./194.3 x 202 cm DESCRIPTION: As Verdi’s infamous “Aida” was set in the Old Kingdom of Egypt and commissioned by Cairo’s Khedivial Opera House, it’s only appropriate that Bućan fully embraced Egyptian aesthetics in this promotion for the opera at the Croatian National Theatre. But, of course, his mummified characters are rendered with the complex geometric patterning that only Bućan can accomplish to make simultaneously efficient and dizzying. This is a six-sheet silkscreen poster and hand-signed by the artist. (Contemporary; Theatre)

        • Roko i Cicibela. 1983.
          Nov. 13, 2022

          Roko i Cicibela. 1983.

          Est: $4,000 - $5,000

ARTIST: BORIS BUĆAN (1947- ) SIZE: 78 x 80 1/4 in./198.2 x 204 cm DESCRIPTION: In Croatia, the love story of Roko and Cicibela is as famous as that of Romeo and Juliet—but their story is entirely true. The fisherman Roko Ljubica married Dujka Bašić from Split in 1906; she was nicknamed Cicibela, or street cat, because she was orphaned and poor. Unable to afford a home, they slept in a decommissioned fishing boat for many years, until the city finally gave them a small house. There’s nothing incredible about their story, but locals and tourists alike have been fascinated by their offbeat romance for decades, inspiring numerous plays and film adaptations. Here, Bućan announces the performance of Roko and Cicibela at the Croatian National Theatre in Split. It’s a powerful abstraction with swirling tides, bold patterns, and vibrating colors—the only recognizable object is the hull of the ship, which was the central stability of Roko and Cicibela’s relationship. This is a six-sheet silkscreen poster and hand-signed by the artist. (Contemporary; Theatre)

        • Lizistrata. 1982.
          Jul. 12, 2022

          Lizistrata. 1982.

          Est: $4,000 - $5,000

ARTIST: BORIS BUĆAN (1947- ) SIZE: 76 5/8 x 80 in./194.6 x 203.5 cm DESCRIPTION: Bućan adds a contemporary twist to the ancient Greek comedy Lysistrata, written by Aristophanes and first performed in 411 BC. The comedy traces a woman’s extraordinary mission to end the Peloponnesian War by denying all men of land and sex. She encourages all women to withhold sexual privileges from their husbands and lovers to force them into peace negotiations. Bućan’s inspiration for this design was a Richard Avedon photograph of four naked women who appeared to be marching. He added heads that look like Greek vases and boom: an unforgettable image was made. This six-sheet silkscreen poster is hand-signed. (Contemporary; Theatre)

          Otelo. 1983.

          Est: $4,000 - $5,000

ARTIST: BORIS BUĆAN (1947- ) SIZE: 76 5/8 x 78 3/4 in./194.7 x 200 cm DESCRIPTION: Bućan had previously designed a poster for Verdi’s Nabucco, employing a lioness shaped from details of Assyrian art. This inspired him to further experiment with animal forms, leading to the black and white tigers seen here for a production of Shakespeare’s Othello. These animals reference one line in the play: taunted by Queen Margaret, the Duke of York exclaims, “O tiger’s heart wrapped in a woman’s hide!”—referencing the fierceness and deviousness of these wild cats. The slashed stripes of the tigers are echoed in the tall grasses surrounding them, creating a stunning, vibrating effect. This six-sheet silkscreen poster is hand-signed. He has since exhibited all over the world. The Croatian Designer Association recently gave him their lifetime achievement award. His large format posters are arresting, not only for their size but also for their superb combination of design and humor.
