Wildwood Farm, Hampstead Heath signed and dated 'F.Buckstone.1880' (lower left) and signed, inscribed and dated 'Wildwood Farm. Hampstead Heath. F.Buckstone. 10. South Crescent. Bedford Square. W.1.' (on the reverse) and repeated (on an old label on the reverse) oil on canvas 20 1/8 x 30 in. (51 x 76.5 cm.) NOTES Wildwood Farm is in the north of Hampstead, within the hamlet of North End. Camden's Britannia and other documents of the 16th and 17th centuries refer to the settlement as Wildwood Corner which, along with the name Wyldes for the local farm, suggests a clearing in a largely untamed area of woodland. Today the area corresponds with the north west corner of Hampstead Heath between North End Way and Spaniards Road. Distinguished residents of North End included William Pitt, Earl of Chatham, the ballerina Anna Pavlova and Sir Nikolaus Pevsner, author of The Buildings of England.
