    Est: £800 - £1,200

POPP, Justus (1803-79), and Theodor BÜLAU (1800-61). Die Architectur des Mittelalters in Regensburg. Regensburg: S. Sebald at Nuremberg, for the authors, 1834-39. Ten parts in one, broadsheet 2° (690 x 545mm). 8 ll. of letterpress text, 47 (of 49) engraved plates. (Short tear into one plate, light fraying at extremities, variable spotting.) Unbound as issued, deckle edges, original printed wrappers (separated, front wrapper of part 2 laid down, one corner torn, one neat tear), in modern green leather-backed portfolio and slipcase. FIRST EDITION, RARE IN ANY FORM, especially with the original printed wrappers to all 10 parts, as here. It gives plans, elevations and interiors of Regensburg churches and cathedral, and details, such as flowers and leaves from which Gothic design derived. Each fascicule consisted of one leaf of letterpress description and 4 (pts.5, 8-10), 5 (pts.1-4, 6) or 6 (pt.7) plates. The plates are listed on the back wrapper of each part. Text for pts. 4-6 is printed together on one sheet with a description of two additional, unnumbered plates, one of flowers and one of geometrical designs, thereby bringing the total plate count to 49. The original printed notice about the text to pt. 4 appearing in a later part is preserved on the first wrapper. Cf. RIBA 4064 for a French edition of 1841, which was presumably envisaged from the beginning, since the plates are numbered in both French and German.
