WRITE UP The establishment of the Academia de Dibujo y Pintura in 1855 marked a significant shift in Philippine art, as it popularized the painting of genre scenes. This trend would dominate the Philippine art scene from the 1850s to the 1900s, depicting the townsfolk in their daily activities. A key figure in this movement was Teodoro Buenaventura, who not only contributed as an artist but also as a mentor. He was one of the founding teachers of the UP School of Fine Arts and played a crucial role in shaping the careers of several notable Filipino artists. Landscape painting, sometimes inhabited by people in different activities, was Buenaventura’s strong point. The work at hand, El Autor, was created a year before his departure from his teaching post at UP. This piece features a typical barrio scene; several people are out of the confines of their nipa huts to go about their day, and some are seen from their windows tending to their duties. ANTONIO ARANETA COLLECTION El Pacto de Sangre (Homage to Juan Luna) signed and dated 1939 (lower right) oil on canvas 19" x 25 1/2" (48 cm x 65 cm) A Rare Buenaventura Historical Painting Homage to an Iconic Masterpiece Teodoro Buenaventura's El Pacto de Sangre (Homage to Juan Luna) is a rarity, especially in the context of the material destruction that the Second World War inflicted upon the artist's major works. Many of his large-scale works were destroyed during the Second World War, and most of his extant oeuvre consists of relatively small landscapes and genre paintings. Two of the most prominent survivors of this cultural catastrophe in Buenaventura's oeuvre are the oil on canvas paintings "Banana Peddler on a Wooden Bridge" (ca. 1920s) and "Mag-Ina" (1936), both in the collection of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP). Buenaventura's rendition of Luna's iconic masterpiece stands out as one of the only extant manifestations of the artist's delving into anecdotal painting, briefly veering away from his genre pieces. When Buenaventura made this rarity, four years had already passed since his retirement from his teaching post at the University of the Philippines School of Fine Arts, in which he was one of its founding teachers in 1909. Luna's 1886 masterpiece El Pacto de Sangre depicts the historic blood compact ('Sandugo') on March 16, 1565 between Miguel Lopez de Legazpi and Rajah Sikatuna of Bohol as a symbol of alliance but proved to be a critical juncture in the eventual colonization of the archipelago. Luna painted the work in conformity with an agreement with the Ayuntamiento de Manila to produce a set of paintings for the city council, which granted him a fouryear pensionado scholarship (with an annual stipend of 400 pesos for the first two years, increasing to 600 pesos for the remaining two years) to continue pursuing higher art studies in Rome after his triumphant silver medal win at the 1881 Exposición Nacional de Bellas Artes in Madrid for his career-defining work "La Muerte de Cleopatra." The works Luna produced for the Ayuntamiento were Portrait of Miguel Lopez de Legazpi (destroyed during World War II), El Pacto de Sangre (now displayed at the top of the Malacañang's Grand Staircase leading to the Ceremonial Hall), Portrait of Gov. Gen. Ramon Blanco, and the unfinished La Muerte de Simón de Anda. Buenaventura's version is a faithful homage to Luna, who was already a divinity in the annals of Philippine art by then. Buenaventura exhibits his predisposition towards a muted palette, which can also be viewed in his genre works. However, Buenaventura retains the sense of apprehension present in Luna's work. The words "Hispania R." (Spain, the King) are still etched on the wall. Sikatuna's back is turned away from the viewer. At the same time, the conquistadores (who outnumber Sikatuna in the composition and whose body languages evoke condescending stances) are prominently highlighted, notably Legazpi (seated in the center), Fray Andres de Urdaneta (donned in friar's clothes), and Felipe de Salcedo (the person in full battle gear beside Urdaneta), Legazpi's grandson. The implied atmosphere of anxiety in the work is meant to evoke the impending loss of the natives' freedom under a brewing three-century colonial rule. (Adrian Maranan)

Nipa Hut at River's Edge signed and dated 1925 (lower right) oil on board 30" x 32" (76 cm x 81 cm) PROVENANCE: Estate of an American whose father had served in the US Navy WRITE UP: Teodoro Buenaventura’s 1925 depiction of a serene bahay kubo is among the earliest masterpieces by one of the distinguished pillars of Philippine genre painting to come to market. Buenaventura’s works are deemed rare, for many of his pieces did not survive the cultural destruction brought by the Second World War. Bahay Kubo showcases Buenaventura at the height of his artistic prowess; he was among the country’s undisputed landscape painters of the first half of the 20th century. The composition is bathed in golden swathes of light beams emanating from a majestic sunset. Void of any depictions of human figures, except for a reference to human habitation, Buenaventura’s Bahay Kubo offers an interesting insight into Filipino philosophical concepts centering on harmony and collective identity, that is, the perception that humans are inherently part of nature. Thus, landscapes, in the Filipino sense, are images of humanity themselves, and a tranquil landscape runs in parallel to a Filipino viewpoint of envisioning and building a strong yet imagined sense of nationhood, especially when put into the context of a part victorious, part tragic independence significantly interrupted by the American occupation. When Buenaventura created this piece, he had been teaching at the University of the Philippines School of Fine Arts for a prodigious 16 years, serving as an instructor in Elementary Drawing. Teodoro Buenaventura Sr. (1863 - 1950) Street Scene signed (lower right) dated 1937 oil on wood 9 1/2" x 12 1/2" (24 cm x 32 cm) Teodoro Buenaventura's Street Scene is among the few surviving works by one of the country's undisputed masters of genre painting; many of his major works unfortunately perished during World War II. Street Scene hung prominently in the Main Reception Room of Don J. Antonio Araneta's magnificent Forbes Park abode, along with artworks by other revered artists, such as early works by Vicente Rivera y Mir, Amorsolo, Sanso, and even a pen and ink wash by the esteemed Italian master Caravaggio. Luna's Sorprendidos (ca. 1887) from his Venetian honeymoon with Paz Pardo de Tavera and Buenaventura's own A Countryside Dawn (1938) also graced the room's walls. Both were auctioned at León Gallery in 2021 and 2022, respectively. All these works had once greeted Don J. Antonio's distinguished guests, such as US President Richard Nixon. Buenaventura first immersed himself in art in childhood, drawing pen and ink landscapes of his native Bulacan. He became fatherless at 14, so he convinced his mother to allow him to migrate to Manila for job opportunities. When he landed a job in the capital, Buenaventura continued his passion for the arts. This sustained pursuit eventually led him to be discovered by the mother of Ramon Salas, his employer, who sent him to the Escuela Superior de Pintura, Escultura, y Grabado, the same institution that honed Luna and Hidalgo. Buenaventura would eventually become a prolific and well-decorated artist. He competed in the Exposition Regional de Filipinas, instituted by Governor-General Ramon Blanco as the first Exposition in the archipelago to promote trade and commerce. It was held in Manila from January 23 to July 19, 1895. Buenaventura would win a bronze medal for Después del Baño (After the Bath), one of the three oil paintings he entered in the competition. Buenaventura would also win a silver medal for his work Ya Vienen (They Are Coming) at an exhibition sponsored by the Asociacion Internacional de Artistas in 1908, besting Fabian de la Rosa, who was, at the time, already a big name in Philippine art. In 1899, Buenaventura opened his portrait shop in San Jose, Trozo, in present-day Santa Cruz, Manila. Numerous commissions for portraits and landscapes flocked to him for his excellence in classical realism. He would also establish in his home his own school, the Academia de Dibujo, which counted among its students Serafin Serna, Tomas Bernardo, and Mauro Malang Santos. The now revered Malang had his first serious art training under Buenaventura, his private tutor when he was only 11 years old. Buenaventura was a founding teacher of the University of the Philippines School of Fine Arts, serving for almost three decades, from 1909 to 1935. (Adrian Maranan)

Teodoro Buenaventura discovered his aptitude for painting when he was still a child, creating pen and ink landscapes of his home province, Bulacan. Buenaventura was left fatherless at 14, leaving him to fend for himself. From his native Paombong, he came to Manila to pursue a decent livelihood. The wealthy mother of his employer, Ramon Salas, discovered his artistic flair and sponsored his studies at the famed Escuela Superior de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado in Manila. Buenaventura rose to prominence as a painter-mentor during the twilight of the Spanish colonial era and the subsequent subjugation of the country under a new imperial power. Several prestigious art competitions recognized Buenaventura's prowess, including winning a bronze medal at the Exposition Regional de Filipinas (1895) and a silver medal at the Asociación Internacional de Artistas exhibition (1908). In 1899, Buenaventura opened his portrait shop in San Jose de Trozo. Buenaventura instituted the Academia de Dibujo in his house in Magdalena Street, Trozo. Several of his students would later emerge as celebrated painters, such as Serafin Serna, Tomas Bernardo, and Mauro Malang Santos. Buenaventura was one of the founding teachers of the UP School of Fine Arts. He was appointed instructor in elementary drawing, where he was deeply beloved by his students. He taught at the university until 1935. Landscape painting was Buenaventura's métier. His depictions of the Philippine countryside, which were perceived directly from nature, exhibit his attention to detail. Buenaventura accurately renders the transience of light in a natural setting, as shown by the varying degree of illumination in specific areas of the canvas. The Second World War wreaked havoc on many of Buenaventura's masterpieces. However, several small-sized landscapes and genre pieces, such as the work at hand and one of the artist’s early works, survived the ravages of the war. These works bestow a visual prospect of the legacy of one of the country's undisputed masters of classical realism. (A.M.)

WRITE UP: Teodoro Buenaventura Sr. was one of the foremost painters and art teachers in the Philippines. One of the early masters of the classical realism in the country, Buenaventura became fatherless at the age of fourteen, hence coming to Manila to look for work. His education at the Escuela Superior de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado was sponsored by his employer. He also opened the Academia de Dibujo in his home situated in Magdalena Street; some of his students were Serafin Serna, Tomas Bernardo, and Mauro Malang Santos. Buenaventura was also among the founding teachers of the UP School of Fine Arts from its establishment in 1909 to 1935. Sadly, a bulk of his major works were destroyed during World War II, but most of the surviving and preserved works are small landscapes, genre pieces, and portraits. His notable works of the Philippine countryside include rivers, lakes, and streams as well as quiet shades of nature. The central tone often present in his works is a calming shade of green, evoking a quality of stillness. He would also use somber colors and achieve a solidity of mass and a brooding atmosphere through his refined style. Rio De San Juan is his 1927 work— with a note to art patron Alfonso Ongpin who is also his close friend—in which the artist concerns himself with the inviting atmosphere of a serene scene in which evocations of light and complementing colors bring out the beauty of nature.
