(Map - Asia) Asia Secunda Pars Terrae in Forma Pegasi

        Est: $2,000 - $2,300

Bunting's Rare Map of Asia in the Form of a Pegasus. Asia. Heinrich Bunting, Asia Secunda Pars Terrae in Forma Pegasi, from Itinerarium Sacrae Scripturae, 1581 (circa). Hand Color. Among the earliest cartographic oddities are the famous maps from Heinrich Bunting's unusual travel book based on the Bible. This woodblock map of Asia is presented as the mythical winged horse, Pegasus. The horse is drawn fairly realistically, so that a good deal of imagination is required to view the map. The head represents Asia Minor with the mouth at Istanbul. The wings portray Central Asia and Siberia with the Caspian Sea laying horizontally between the wings and the saddle. Persia is delineated on the horse blanket with the forelegs forming Arabia. The hind legs represent the Indian and Malay peninsulas. A ship, a sea creature and mermaids fill the seas. German text on verso.

      • (Map - Africa) Africa Tertia Pars Terrae
        Mar. 15, 2022

(Map - Africa) Africa Tertia Pars Terrae

        Est: $950 - $1,200

Bunting's Unique Map of Africa. Africa. Heinrich Bunting, Africa Tertia Pars Terrae, from Itinerarium Sacrae Scripturae, 1589 (circa). Black & White. A very rare woodcut map of the continent with an unusual shape, tapering to a point in the south. Like Bunting's other, more allegorical maps, this map of Africa is unique. The interior is presented in the traditional manner with the Nile rising from twin lakes in the Montes Lunae. However, Bunting introduces a third, even larger lake, Nidilis lacus, in central Africa, and a small lake to the east as additional sources for the Nile. Meroe, the mythical tombs of the Nubian Kings, are located on a large island in the Nile River. Priester Johans Land, mythical kingdom of the Christian king Prester John, is located at the juncture of the Blue and White Nile. Der weissen Morenland (the White Moors) are shown in northwest Africa, and Der Schwartzen Morenland (the Black Moors) are in the central region. The island of Zaphala with a group of other small islands occupy roughly the position of Madagascar, and probably refers to the region from which King Solomon supposedly acquired the gold and silver for his temple. The surrounding seas are engraved in narrow wavy lines and include a sailing ship, merman and a sea bird. Bunting's popular theological commentary was first published in 1581, but did not include this separate map of Africa until 1589. This is the first variant with the placement of Alcayr (Cairo) on the east bank of the Nile, and Memphis on the west bank. German text on verso.

      • Bunting - Map of the World published 1581 - Die eigentliche und warhafftige gestalt der Erden und des Meers: Cosmographica Universalis
        Aug. 07, 2021

Bunting - Map of the World published 1581 - Die eigentliche und warhafftige gestalt der Erden und des Meers: Cosmographica Universalis

        Est: $2,000 - $4,000

This world map is entitled Die eigentliche und warhafftige gestalt der Erden und des Meers: Cosmographica Universalis and was done by Heinrich Bunting for his work Itinerarium Sacrae Scripturae. It was published in Magdeburg, Germany in 1581. The work itself was one of the most popular of the 16th century. The map presented shows the known world at the time. It is centered on the Holy Land and features Europe, Africa, most of Asia, a hint of the Americas, and perhaps the western coast of Australia. While Willem Janszoon, Dutch navigator, is widely credited with the discovery of Australia in 1606 there has been speculation in history that the Portuguese had secretly identified Australia in the 1500s. This map in partuclar lends credence to the idea with the landmass presented entitled "India Meridionalis". The map shoes some sea monsters in the ocean. There is German text on verso of the map. Shirley notes that Bunting had a "strange geographic license." Bunting created his maps from the perspective of Biblical geography rather than pure accurate cartography. He placed many of the cities of the Middle East because of its relation to Biblical events. His map added the most detail to Africa. This included the island of Meroe which refered to the mythical tombs of Nubian Kings. It also showed the kingdom of Prester John, a Christian King who held out against the Muslims. Heinrich Bunting (1545-1606) was a Protestant theologian and teacher. He started his career as a preacher but was dismissed from two posts. Bunting became best known for his work Itinerarium Sacrae Scripturae. The work was eventually published in 60 editions dating from 1581 to 1757.
