Erschienen bei Franz Bonn, Bilder aus dem Familienleben in vierzehn Original-Radierungen, Leipzig 1874. Hugo Bürkner 1818 Dessau – 1897 Dresden Illustrator, Holzschneider, Radierer. Schüler des Dessauer Hofmalers Heinrich Beck. Ab 1837 Besuch der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, wo er E. Bendemann und J. Hübner kennen lernet und diesen 1840 nach Dresden folgte. 1846 Lehrer und ab 1855 Professor im Atelier für Holzschneidekunst an der Akademie. 1874 wurde er Ehrenmitglied der Wiener Akademie. In Dresden kam Bürkner mit Ludwig Richter in Kontakt, mit dem er später zusammenarbeitete. Er trug entscheidend zur Entwicklung des Holzschnitts bei. Viele der unter seiner Aufsicht entstandenen Holzschnitte, zierten beliebte Kinder- und Jugendbücher des 19. Jahrhunderts.

Signed with monograms by both artists at the lower margin of the image in the printing block and dated 1847 and 1851 respectively. Below additionally inscribed and titled with information on artist and publisher.           Der kleine Zeichner. Radierung auf Velin. 10,7 x 14,7 cm. 1864. Andresen 129 II.Der Illustrator und Graphiker Hugo Bürkner lernte zuerst bei dem Dessauer Hofmaler Heinrich Beck und ging 1837 nach Düsseldorf, wo er im Atelier von Karl Sohn zum Maler ausgebildet wurde. Hier schloß er eine dauernde Freundschaft mit seinen Malerkollegen Eduard Bendemann und Julius Hübner. Das entscheidende Ereignis für Bürkners weitere künstlerische Karriere brachte das Jahr 1840, als er Bendemann und Hübner nach Dresden folgte. Er entwickelte in der Folgezeit eine sehr erfolgreiche Tätigkeit als Illustrator und Graphiker und wurde 1846 als Lehrer an das neubegründete Atelier für Holzschneidekunst der Dresdener Akademie berufen. Im Frühjahr 1855 erhielt Bürkner den Titel Professor; 1874 ernannte ihn die Wiener Akademie zum Ehrenmitglied. Seit 1848 befasste sich Bürkner in seinem druckgraphischen Werk mit Themen aus dem direkten familiären Umfeld. Der kleine Zeichner ist ein besonders anmutiges Beispiel dieser Bildgattung. In einer detaillierten Technik hat Bürkner den nicht näher bekannten Knaben, wohl einen Sohn des Künstlers, dargestellt. Der kleine Junge mit dem Engelsprofil liegt entspannt auf einem Sofa und zeichnet. An der Wand über ihm ist eine Kinderzeichnung befestigt, der Reifen mit einem Stock vorne ist ein weiteres Attribut seiner kindlichen Unschuld. Prachtvoller, scharfer Druck mit breitem Rand. Schwacher Wasserrand oben und unten, leicht stockfleckig, Reste einer Albumheftung entlang des linken äußeren Randes, sonst gut erhalten.
