    Lithograph of a bust view of George Washington by John Henry Bufford (1810-1870). Print measures 24" x 19.5" (sight) and is housed in a frame measuring 30.5" x 26". Line beneath subject states "Boston. Lith & Pub by J.H. Bufford, 313 Washton St., 1863". Frame exhibits some slight loss with print exhibiting toning, light foxing and some peripheral staining.

    John Henry Bufford (1810-1870) was a lithographer in 19th-century Boston, Massachusetts. Bufford trained "in the Pendleton shop in Boston from 1829 to 1831. In 1835 he moved to New York, where he "worked independently for five years while accepting commissions from George Endicott and Nathaniel Currier." Bufford returned to Boston in 1839, and became "chief artist" in the print shop owned by Benjamin W. Thayer (who had bought the Pendleton outfit).     LITHO, HANDCOLORED - 'Jamaica Pond, West Roxbury, Mass.' by John Henry Bufford (MA, 1810-1870), copyrighted 1859, depicting the new craze of ice skating as introduced to New England on this pond at this time; Bufford was Winslow Homer's first instructor and employer, Homer sold images very similar to this the same year to Leslie's and Ballous Pictorial magazines, this print is in the original molded lemon gold frame, under old glass, SS: 19 1/4" x 24 1/2", OS: 21 1/4" x 26 1/2", trimmed, toned stained at bottom, 3" horizontal tear at center, short tears and chips along top edge. Still quite nice and scarce.
