ARTIST: ROBERT BUHLER SIZE: 45 x 30 1/8 in./114.3 x 76.5 cm PRINTER: Weiner, London DESCRIPTION: As is the case in the high-flying Gardner poster for Shell (see PAI-XLV, 497), Buhler demonstrates Shell’s “High Performance” with hardworking aircraft, in this case a triumvirate of legendary Hawker Hurricanes making their way through tempestuous skies. Introduced in 1937, the British-made single-seat fighter aircraft was crucial to enabling the Royal Air Force to win the Battle of Britain of 1940, and accounted for the majority of the RAF's air victories. The Hawker Hurricane was such a cultural touchstone and such a British source of national pride that the plane even found its way into a children’s alphabet book from World War Two, which declared “H is for Hurricane, never known to fail.” (Modern; Aviation)

Robert Buhler RA, British 1916-1989- Flowers; oil on canvas, signed, 51 x 61 cm (ARR) Provenance: Private Collection, London Please refer to department for condition report The wood is in a wooden gilded frame, there are some cracks and scuff marks, but it is in otherwise good condition. The are three circular craquelure circles with cracks inside, which we would suggest was caused from three dents into the canvas. The two largest are approx 10cm diameter and the smaller one approx 6cm. These cracks appear to be camouflaged by the shape of the rose. There are some minor scratches to the surface. Overall the piece is in fair condition.
