Bullard 1844' lower left, gallery information applied verso, gilt frame, some loss near frame, light craquelure throughout, slight damage to frame, ss. 39 1/4' h. x 34" w. [Provenance: JAMES W. BARKER (1815-1869) lived in New York City on Lexington Avenue and ran for mayor in New York on the Know-Nothing Party ticket. He did not win. Later he moved to Rahway, NJ where he died suddenly in 1869. According to census records of 1850, Annah Barker, age 68, lived with the James Barker family. Therefore we assume that she was James Barker's mother. In the same household was an Abigail Barker, age 31, who must have been the wife. She is obviouly not the person on the painting as the note on the reverse states. The artist of the painting was Otis A Bullard (1816-1853) He died young(37) but had achieved widespread fame. From 1842 to 1853 he exhibited at the National Academy. His works are in the collections of Yale University, Smith College, Harvard University, and others.]
