Silver print, the image measuring 7½x9½ inches (19.1x24.1 cm.), with Bullock's Monterey credit stamp and the notation "#13 Space" in pencil on verso. Provenance Stephen Cohen Gallery, Los Angeles; to the Collection of Neil Robert Berzak As his daughter Barbara notes, "Point Lobos Tide Pool, 1957 is another serendipitous image that took place on the [Point Lobos State] Reserve. The day this photograph was made, Dad was hauling his heavy field camera along the South Shore Trail when he happened upon a tide pool with a galaxy in its midst. He set up his equipment as quickly as he could and made his first exposure. Normally, he liked to bracket his exposures, but before he could make a second one, a gust of wind swept across the pool and the complex pattern of microscopic organisms vanished. Fortunately, one exposure was good enough. Whenever he told the story, Dad would laugh and say, "I was just damn lucky that day!" What he often left unexpressed was the lasting impression of the experience that exemplified for him the continual being-and-becoming nature of the universe as well as the kinship of its microcosmic and macrocosmic dimensions. ARTIST: Wynn Bullock TITLE: Child in Forest, 1951, MEDIUM: Vintage Silver Gelatin IMAGE SIZE: 7 1/2 x 9 1/2 in DESCRIPTION: Signed and dated in pencil mount recto; inscribed "To Don, Happy 10th Birthday, Wynn" and Mar Vista stamp mount verso. Judging from the mount board and apparent lack of fluorescence, this print was likely made in the 1950s. This particular composition is a rare alternative to the version most frequently reproduced; this image was made after Wynn tore off one of the fern leaves by his daughter Barbara's feet and placed it at her head. Thus, there are only two leaves on the log instead of the original three. This is the most tonally virtuous print the Gallery has seen—the shadows are deep and Barbara's figure is luminescent. Her body appears to glow when the print isn't in direct light. The importance of the image, along with the numerous institutions that hold prints of it, need not be elucidated here. It is the cover of Wynn's most important publication, "The Enchanted Landscape".
