  • John Buncombe (fl. 1820 - 1830) - A Sergeant of Volunteers c.1795-1800
    Feb. 22, 2017

    John Buncombe (fl. 1820 - 1830) - A Sergeant of Volunteers c.1795-1800

    Est: £500 - £600

In profile to the left, wearing scarlet coat with silver lace, buttons and epaulette, blue standing collar, white cross belt with gilt navette-shaped belt plate, his powdered wig worn en queue beneath a feathered bicorn hat Watercolour In a wood frame Oval, 11 x 8cm (4 3/8 x 3 1/8in.) The present lot is something of a rarity, being of a Sergeant of Volunteers (or perhaps Militia) of an unidentified unit, c.1795-1800. Period depictions of non-commissioned officers are very scarce, and sociologically significant when found. Given the relatively low cost of Buncombe s silhouettes in comparison to other forms of portraiture, it is feasible to suggest that Buncombe would have had non-commissioned officers (particularly of local volunteers) among his clientele.
