    Est: $700 - $900

John Elwood Bundy American / Indiana, North Carolina, (1853-1933) dirt road in a rural landscape at dawn oil on board signed lower right. Biography from the Archives of askART: Part of the The Richmond School of Indiana painters and Richmond's premier artist, John Bundy was born in Guilford County, North Carolina and was raised on a farm in Morgan County, Indiana near Monrovia. He attended Quaker schools and married Mary Marlatt in 1875. He spent nearly a decade in New York City as a portraitist and was also a photographer, but he decided to focus on landscape painting. He worked in both oil and watercolor, and much of his subject matter came from Wayne County, Indiana, especially the Whitewater Valley. In 1888, he moved to Richmond and for eight years headed the Art Department at Earlham College where he taught drawing and painting. During that time, a book of his etchings, Fond Recollections was published and reflected his love of the scenery around Earlham. After the death of his wife in 1906, he built a studio behind the family home in Monrovia and lived with his sister. From 1910 to 1911, he traveled in California and then spent several summers in Northern Michigan, on Little Traverse Bay, where he painted primarily in watercolor. By the early 1920s, he was sharing his home and studio with Elwood Morris, a Richmond painter, and his wife. He exhibited widely across the United States including the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition, the Pennsylvania Academy in 1904, the National Academy of Design in 1911 and 1916, the Chicago Art Institute in 1903 and 1907-1914, the Hoosier Salon in 1925, and the 1902 Society of Western Artists. His primary dealer was J.W. Young of Chicago. In 1929, Bundy, who was getting quite frail, moved to Harlingen, Texas with his son, but died in a sanatorium in Cincinnati on January 17, 1933. John Elwood (J.E.) Bundy (1853-1933) 10" x 14" oil on canvas, Stormy Sunset, signed lower left, dated 1911. The following biography is from the fineestateart.com website: One of Indiana’s great native artists, John Elwood Bundy grew up in Morgan Country (Indiana) and after spending about a decade painting portraits in New York, moved to Richmond. There he ran the art department at Earlham College but retired from the position sometime around the mid 1890s to devote himself to landscape painting. He drew inspiration from the Whitewater Valley and often infused his pictures with sheep or more commonly, cattle. Known to have spent a few summers, around 1915 in the Traverse City, MI area. Bundy moved to Texas in 1929, with failing health. He returned to Cincinnati in 1933, where he passed away. John Elwood Bundy (1853-1933) was born in Guilford County, North Carolina, but moved with his family to a farm near Monrovia, Indiana, In 1893. He attended Quaker schooling but was encouraged to study art by the poet James Whitcomb Riley. Bundy spent time in Indianapolis and Martinsville before setting down in Richmond with his wife Marry Marlott of Morgan County and their two sons. He became the head of the Earlham College Art Department, but left after eight years to pursue painting full-time and later became one of the founders of the Art Association of Richmond. Although making money as a portrait painter, Bundy preferred to paint landscapes of the beech woods in the area. He is regarded now as Richmond’s premier artist and the dean of the “Richmond Group.” He is buried in the Earlham Cemetery and much of his work still hangs in Indiana institutions. During his life he exhibited throughout the state. You can see the bio on our site https://fineestateart.com/artists/john_elwood_bundy

The following information was submitted by a site visitor: John Elwood Bundy (1853-1933) was born in Guilford County, North Carolina, but moved with his family to a farm near Monrovia, Indiana, In 1893. To see this biography on our site, visit: https://fineestateart.com/artists/john_elwood_bundy
