SHIOKAWA BUNRIN (1808-1877) Rouleau vertical à l'encre et couleurs sur soie Figurant trois lucioles volant à la surface de l'eau un soir d'été. Signé "Kachiku rojin Shio Bunrin" (Shio(kawa) Bunrin, vieil homme Kachiku) en partie inférieure gauche et avec deux sceaux "Bunin" et "Shion". Dim. tot. 170,5 x 32 cm Provenance : Galerie Gregg Baker, Londres NOTE Artiste de Kyoto, Shiokawa Bunrin étudie auprès de Okamoto Toyohuko et devient une figure centrale de l'école Shijo. Il travaille pour l'aristocratie de Kyoto et notamment pour la famille Yasui. Les lucioles ("Hotaru") sont un motif récurrent dans l'oeuvre de Bunin. Ce sujet pourrait s'inspirer du chapitre 45 ("Iku Hotaru" Lucioles en vol) du Ise Monogatari où un homme vient d'apprendre que la femme qui l'aimait est morte sans avoir avoué son amour. Ce soir-là, lorsque les lucioles sortent, il s'assoit et se lamente.Il est à noter qu'un rouleau vertical de Bunrinl avec un sujet simialire est conservé dans les collections du British Museum (1980,0728,0.4). D'autres oeuvres de l'artiste sont conservées dans les collections de l'Ashmolean Museum, Oxford ; Freer Gallery of Art, Washington; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Tokyo National Museum; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Signed Bunrin hitsu with seal Bunrin. The surimono depicting a monkey trainer with his monkey dressed in a short robe. Inscriptions: Inscribed to the back in pencil, ‘Bunrin (1856)’ and ‘4173-30’. SIZE of the sheet 17.8 x 24 cm Condition: Good condition with wear. Browning of paper, minor stains, folds with associated tears, and creasing. Gently mounted on a passepartout. Provenance: From the private collection of Thomas Padua, Mühldorf, Germany. Thomas Padua was an artist and collector of Japanese woodblock prints who exhibited his surimono collection at the Olaf Gulbransson Museum, in ‘Glückwünsche aus Kyoto: Japanische Shijo-Surimono aus der Sammlung Thomas Padua,’ 3 November 2013 to 26 January 2014. Surimono, literally "printed matter", are high-quality, limited-edition, privately commissioned, woodblock-printed "greeting cards," mainly produced between the 1790s and the 1830s, and usually ordered for New Year's greetings. Surimono usually paired poetic texts with images, and both were typically intended to carry the cachet of "insider knowledge" for a cultured and well-educated audience. Museum comparison: Compare a closely related print, with similar seals, in the collection of the British Museum, museum number 1980,1022,0.8.

Bunrin, who omitted the sun, goes the naturalistic way. We could expect the political changes of the Meiji restoration from the master who opened his mind to new tendencies. His powerful brush knows how to create movement in the water and his colouring of the sky introduces the brightness of the setting sun - the true purpose of this auspicious composition. Danach ist Bunrin einer der führenden Künstler Kyotos mit guten Kontakten zum wiedererstarkten Kaiserhaus. Er spielt eine große Rolle bei der zunehmenden Institutionalisierung der Kunst, in Ausbildung und Öffentlichkeit. Bunrin's naturalistische Darstellung ist eine Variante der aufgehenden Sonne über dem Meer, eine traditionelle Bildkomposition, die praktisch zum Familieninventar gehört und bei entsprechenden, Glück verheißenden Gelegenheiten aufgehängt wird. Von nur der Sonne bis alleine das Meer reichen die Varianten möglicher Darstellungen. Vom malerischen Standpunkt ist die Herausforderung, aus dem gewählten Motiv ein wirkungsvolles Kunstwerk zu schaffen, groß. Bunrin konzentriert sich ganz auf das Spiel derWellen, für deren Spannung die Kraft und Linienführung der Pinselstriche Grundlage ist. Um etwas Gischt zu erzeugen, vertraut der Maler auf einige Felsen, die Tiefenwirkung der Komposition wird vom geschickten Farbeinsatz erreicht, der Meer und Himmel miteinander verschmelzen lässt. Dieses Bild ist in der originalen Montierung sehr gut erhalten. Anm.: Der Gegensatz zwischem dem unruhigen Meer, dessen Rauschen um die Felsen man zu vernehmen meint, und dem kaum bewegten, stark mystisch erfüllten Raum des Dunstes und einer allmählich sich rötenden Sphäre, ist packend dargestellt und intensiv zu fühlen.
