Michelangelo (1475) Sold at Auction Prices

Sculptor, Painter, b. 1475 - d. 1564

(b Caprese, Italy 1475; d 1564) One of the most important artists of the Italian Renaissance, Michelangelo excelled in the arts of painting, sculpture, and architecture. As was the practice at the time, he was apprenticed at the age of twelve to the Florentine painter Domenico Ghirlandaio. His interest soon shifted to sculpture and he attracted the patronage of the wealthy and powerful Lorenzo de Medici. Michelangelo benefited from studying Classical Greek and Roman models in Lorenzo’s sculpture garden, and the influence of this experience can be seen throughout his life’s work. Among his most notable early works are his Pieta for the Vatican in Rome and his colossal sculpture of David in Florence, both completed before the age of thirty. Despite his preference for working in sculpture, perhaps his single greatest artistic achievement was the decoration of the Sistine Chapel for Pope Julius II. Representing scenes from Genesis on the ceiling and the Last Judgment on the wall, Michelangelo painted his frescos single-handedly in the span of just four years. His infamously tempestuous and melancholy personality contributed to his reputation as a tortured artistic genius, and many of his later works were either left unfinished or destroyed by the artist. Nevertheless, Michelangelo enjoyed papal patronage in Rome throughout most of his lifetime, and upon his death in 1564, his body was returned to Florence and interred in Santa Croce in a state ceremony of a grandeur normally accorded only to the higher aristocracy.

MIGUEL ANGEL BUONARROTI ( Caprese Michelangelo,1475 -Rome, 1564). "Christ". Gilded bronze and silver in purity cloth. Measurements: 26 x 21 cm. Francisco Pacheco was the first to write about these copies in Arte de la pintura, published posthumously in 1649. According to Pacheco, it was an Italian goldsmith based in Seville, whom he called Juan Bautista Franconio, who brought a bronze of 30 cm according to Michelangelo's model from Rome in 1597. Pacheco polychromed the first of the molds in 1600 and gave it as a gift to Pablo de Céspedes, prebendary of the Cathedral of Córdoba. What interested Pacheco most was that Michelangelo-Franconio's corpus perpetuated a vision of St. Bridget of Sweden, in which Jesus was nailed to the cross with four nails, with the left ankle rolled over the right, and that this devotional formation in turn influenced the great Sevillian Sculptor Juan Martínez Montañés. The pure and resigned character of Christ recalls Michelangelo's early years, beginning with the wooden corpus in Santo Spirito, Florence, and the dead Christ in his painted Entombment (National Gallery of Art, London). In his old age, Michelangelo was more obsessed than ever with the challenge of conveying the divine love expressed by the crucified. The musculature was elaborated in a famous drawing in the Teylers Museum in Haarlem, which includes a transverse profile without a left arm.[9] Among the most elaborate drawings of Michelangelo's dead Christ, one in the Royal Collection at Windsor comes closest to our model. This model circulated mainly in Spain as mentioned above, both in bronze and silver, and it is debatable whether ours was made in Rome or in Spain.

Italian school of the sixteenth century, inspired by models of MICHELANGELO BUONARROTI (Caprese, 1475-Rome, 1564). Bronze sculpture on ancient marble and onyx base. It presents fractures and adhered parts. Measurements: 19 x 6 x 6 cm. This male bust drinks from Italian Renaissance models: Michelangelo Buonarroti or Donatello (of the latter, the prophet Habakkuk) could be the source of inspiration for the sculptor. It is a realistic figure in whose face we can see the decrepitude and inner agony of the character.

French clock from the second half of the 19th century, following models by MICHELANGELO BUONARROTI (Caprese, 1475-Rome, 1564). F. Barbedienne Fondeur. With Réduction Mecanique A. Collas Brevete seal. Measurements: 47 x 59 x 13 cm. The Barbedienne Fondeur foundry was one of the most important at the time of the Second Empire. Its founder worked for various sculptors, such as Antoine-Louis Barye. In 1839 he teamed up with Achille Collas, inventor of a sculpture reduction system, with whom he set up a bronze factory in Paris, which had three hundred workers. In addition to bronze objects, they made furniture and silver pieces, in an eclectic style that ranged from neo-Renaissance to neo-Louis XVI. He participated in numerous Exhibitions with works by Michelangelo and Ghiberti. Currently copies of his works can be found in the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. On this occasion, the sculptures that crown the clock respond to the models made by Michelangelo for the Medici tombs. In them Michelangelo will represent the Italian Cinquecento in all his splendor, although already announcing the Baroque or Mannerism.

Oil on bronze 25x18 cm. Framed The prototype of this work is by Michelangelo Buonarroti who made it in 1540 for Vittoria Colonna, now lost and known thanks to the drawing in the British Museum in London. Buonarroti's drawing soon became the prototype for numerous variants by his pupil Marcello Venusti and his workshop, the best known today in the Doria Pamphilj Gallery in Rome, the Casa Buonarroti museum in Florence and at the Jesuit college of Campion Hall in University of Oxford . In addition to this version, at least nine other paintings, on copper or on panel, are currently known. The present painting, of fine execution, shows three significant differences from all other known versions: the view of Rome in the background, the closed right hand and a titulus crucis bearing the acronym "E.N.J.". Particularly interesting and rare is the support of the work: a thick bronze plate used to accentuate the luminosity and durability, which could suggest an important noble commission.

            MICHELANGELO BUONARROTI (copia da)

            Est: €100 - €200
