He entered the gardens of the Royal Horticultural Society at Cheswick as a student in 1868 and the Royal Gardens, Kew. He gained skill as a draughtsman there and proceeded to work for The Garden Magazine & The Floral Magazine. He published many works in this time period including this work The Narcissus for which he drew many of the plates.
