          WEDGWOOD GLAZED CREAMWARE PORTRAIT MEDALLION OF FREDERICK AUGUSTUS, DUKE OF YORK, CIRCA 1787 Wedgwood glazed creamware oval portrait medallion of Frederick Augustus, Duke of York, circa 1787, impressed Wedgwood, after Edward Burch (1730-1814), modeled in high relief, the quarter length profile to dexter, pierced at the top for hanging Catalogue note: Literature: Robin Reilly and George Savage, ‘Wedgwood The Portrait Medallions', p.150. The Duke of York was the second son of George III. This highly sculptural relief, which is purposefully pierced at the top for hanging, is thought to have hung in the Wedgwood studios as a model for studio artists.

          EDWARD BURCH R.A (BRITISH circa 1730-1814) Portrait miniature of Master Charles Web Smith, aged 8, circa 1800, wearing dark blue coat with silver buttons and white shirt with frilled collar watercolour on ivory gold frame oval, 73 mm (2 3/4 in) high Charles was the son of Mr. Charles Smith and uncle of Miss Mallet of Osborne Place. The miniature was left to Mrs. Johnston and at her death to be returned to Mrs. Fowler, Living at Upper Clapton, Master Smith's sister. The palm trees evident in the background may provide a clue to the location where this miniature was executed.

          Late 18th cent. Bronze with brown patina beneath remainders of black lacquer. Oval plinth with two drill holes. H. 23,5 cm. - Anatomical figures such as this were used in 18th cent. to teach both medical and art students, for example in the anatomy classes held by the famous anatomist and pioneering obstetrician William Hunter at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. This example was probably cast from a famous wax by the Anglo-Danish sculptor Michael Henry Spang (died 1762) whose model is in the Hunterian Museum in Glasgow. Further bronze examples are known in the V&A Collections or in the Metropolitan Museum as well as in private collections. - Outstanding British gem cutter, medal maker and wax modeler, casted bronzes after his own and foreign designs.
