Charles Ephraim Burchfield Sold at Auction Prices

Water colorist, Painter, b. 1893 - d. 1967

(b Ohio 1893; d 1967) Born in 1893, Charles Burchfield spent his early childhood in the small rural town of Salem, Ohio. As a young boy he enjoyed many afternoons walking through the woods, noting the variety of trees and plants, listening to the sounds of insects and birds and observing the changes in the seasons and the weather. Fascinated by nature, Burchfield recorded his observations by writing in journals and drawing in sketchbooks. He was passionate about art, writing and literature as a boy and studied from 1912-1916 at the Cleveland School of Art where he ultimately decided to become an artist. By 1917 Burchfield's direct and faithful observations of nature evolved into a more stylized, abstract mode punctuated with symbolic representations. The spiritual qualities of the natural world and an essential reverence for the mystery of life inform his work. Using repetitive, lyrically geometric patterns, Burchfield animated his landscapes with forms that contrast the organic elements. Later in his career, Burchfield began to paint forms that grew from his inner fantasies with an almost child-like quality. Charles Ephraim Burchfield (American, 1893-1967) Untitled (Landscape), 1915 graphite on paper bears artist's monogram CB by an unknown hand (lower left); dated 7-21-15 and inscribed (lower right) 6 x 8 7/8 inches. This lot is located in Chicago. We would like to thank Nancy Weekly, Burchfield Scholar at the Burchfield Penney Art Center, for her assistance with cataloguing this work. In the lower right, Charles E. Burchfield wrote the title “M,” date, and notations: “M / 7-21-15 / Foreground trees Dk / BG –.” The title “M” is typical of his 1915 sketches, especially his “All-Day Sketches,” which he lettered alphabetically in order of production. This was the thirteenth sketch of the day. He planned to combine these quick sketches in a larger format painting that might show the progression of weather events during the day. The color notations were to remind him that the “Foreground Trees” were “Dark Blue Green.” Burchfield never created time-lapse paintings—that is, until 1943. He had been inspired by Chinese scroll paintings that he saw as a guard at the Hatch Galleries in Cleveland in 1914, working while a student at the Cleveland School of Art. He graduated in 1916. The Burchfield Penney Art Center’s Charles E. Burchfield Archives contain two lists of these sketches made during the summer of 1915. This one, “M” is listed under the date of “July 21” as: VERSO (M) – Four thunderheads rolling along the horizon The billowing storm clouds are evident on the right side of the composition.

Burchfield Pencil and Watercolor Studies, Meibohm Fine Arts, Inc., East Aurora, New York, October 23-November 21, no 7. Lot essay The work is recorded in the archives of the Burchfield Penney Art Center. We are grateful for the research conducted by Nancy Weekly, Burchfield Scholar, Burchfield Penney Art Center, Buffalo, New York. According to Ms. Weekly, two sources suggest Alley Light was painted in October 1915. The first is Charles E. Burchfield’s, Catalogue of 1915 Sketches, September 1 – October 11, 1915, which offers a survey of the artist's records of quick sketches and studies that he made with the intention of using them to create paintings. They are lettered in the alphabetical order in which they were drawn. In this case, F or H made on October 5, 1915, might refer to the present work. A short journal entry from October 9, 1915 suggests another night may have in fact inspired the artist to paint Alley Light. Writing from Cleveland, Ohio, where he was studying at the Cleveland School of Art, Burchfield recalled: “A week of busy work & sketching – Last evening to B –’s. Mrs. W, H-, Duke, Joe, Julia Wenn, & Daniels - A free & easy time –A rainstorm with tearing wind at midnight – Clears & snappy cold air. Dan & I walk home under the swinging lights & dancing shadows –My attempt in my work to attain more realism, has choked up my imagination. But tonight after school coming thru the park in the high wind, I dreamed of walks along remote yellow-lit country roads, on a windy evening. The other evening Dan & I downtown prowling around obscure streets at midnight."

(43.8 x 33.7cm) Provenance Private Estate, Newport, Rhode Island. Lot essay We are grateful for the research conducted by Nancy Weekly, Burchfield Scholar, Burchfield Penney Art Center, Buffalo, New York. Burchfield’s work from the 1950s reintroduces many of the elements found in his earlier compositions, especially those from 1917–his self-proclaimed ‘Golden Year'–that capture nature’s mystery and mysticism, its changing moods and inherent spirituality. The present work is a view of and through the Artist’s studio door at 3574 Clinton Street, Gardenville, New York, where he had moved in 1925. At the time the painting was created, the studio was still standing, located at the very back of a deep, narrow garden, which the artist represented several times, and to which the studio would eventually be connected in 1959-1960 to provide more space. While The Open Door does not as strongly emphasize the fantastical side of nature as do other contemporary works by the artist, its palpable serenity evokes Burchfield’s quaint childhood in Salem, Ohio, and gives the artist's studio the role of a safe haven. As Burchfield confirmed himself in 1933: “Let my studio be hallowed by large adventurous thoughts; and a feeling of security and isolation from the banalities of life; by dreams, and bold imaginings.” The Open Door is a particularly intimate work that permits us entry into the sanctuary from which Burchfield made his lyrical landscapes. "I’ve painted almost everything you can see from the studio windows,” Burchfield acknowledged in 1953. The work is even more special as it conveys Burchfield’s deep regard towards nature as an inspiring, liberating agent. Indeed, while most of the studio is captured in dark tonalities (even the still life at upper left seems to gently fade and lose its coloring), the outside is bursting with life and replete with vibrant colors. Dapples of green, yellow, and blues prevail, and are magically reflected into the glass of the open door. The work playfully, and very intelligently, invites the viewer to step outside and progress through the several layers that are the main door, the screen door, and the porch. It almost becomes a metaphor for the artist’s creative and working process, a modern rendition of Plato's cave myth: from the shadows of the studio that represent the creator’s mind, the artist steps out in the light to experience and represent the world. He is lured, but also saved, by the beautiful, safe nature which awaits him. Burchfield painted his studio several other times, mostly from different vantage points, either outside or inside. A very similar watercolor, executed in 1963, shows the exact same view but with a fall landscape, thus confirming the artist’s obsession with this gateway between two worlds. Burchfield was in fact so aware of the significance of his studio that he confessed: “One of my ambitions is some day to collect all of the pictures again. Then I would have an exhibit called ‘From My Backyard.’" While the show was never organized, the present piece offers us a unique experience to feel Burchfield's presence.

New York, Debra Force Fine Art, Charles Burchfield: Seasons of Change: 1918-1965, Spring 2011 Lot note: Raised in Salem, Ohio, Charles Ephraim Burchfield studied painting at the Cleveland School of Art with Henry G. Keller. After his graduation in 1916, the young artist very briefly attended New York's National Academy of Design, deciding instead to spend the rest of the year sketching independently. He remained in New York long enough to meet Mary Mowbray-Clarke, who organized an exhibition of his watercolors at her Sunwise Turn Bookshop later that year, before he returned to Salem at the end of 1916. In July of 1918, Burchfield was inducted into the US Army, where his artistic talent was used in the camouflage section at Camp Jackson, South Carolina. During his time in the Army, the artist continued to sketch and paint, exploring the various visual motifs he had begun to formulate earlier in 1918 in his notebooks to represent fear, melancholy, nostalgia, meditation, and other abstract thoughts. From this point until the 1960s, Burchfield's work evolved in subject matter, palette, style, and psychological impact, with his oeuvre divided into three phases. The first, from 1915-1919, features landscapes based upon childhood memories and fantasies, some with a fauvist use of color and others more somber, reflective of his moods and personal feelings. Inspired by Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio, the second phase, from 1919-1943, exhibits a Social Realist or American Scene theme with depictions of small-town life and industrial scenes in and around Buffalo, New York, where he moved to in 1921. In need of a diversion from the aftermath of World War II, the third phase from 1943-1967 returns to the subject matter of his childhood. The resulting watercolors are much more expansive in large-scale formats and in portraying a more expressionistic intensity utilizing swirling strokes, heightened colors, and exaggerated forms. The present watercolor dates from the first phase of the Burchfield's work, when he attempted to codify emotions in pictographic form in his "Conventions for Abstract Thoughts." Devised in 1917 and recorded in a slim notebook, these drawn motifs bear titles such as Fear, Morbidness, Dangerous Brooding, and Fear of Loneliness, and are based on observation and on the association of emotions with certain shapes. The skull-like eye sockets of the strange structure on the left, staring alarmingly over the hills, resemble the symbol Burchfield designated as Insanity or Imbecility. The foreboding atmosphere is further increased by the dark purple clouds striating the yellow sky, which echo the curve of the trees and hills of the landscape. With just a few pencil strokes and swaths of color, Burchfield produced an ominous visual tale, full of the threatening unknown.

Charles Burchfield (1893 - 1967), Edge of the Woods, 1954.

            Est: $10,000 - $15,000

Watercolor on paper. 11 x 17 in. Charles Burchfield was an accomplished painter and wat?rcolor?st who married r?al?st d?pictions of natur? with wondrous abstract ?l?ments. Born in Ohio, Burchf?eld studi?d at the Cleveland Inst?tut? of Art and later at th? National Acad?my of D?s?gn in New York C?ty. Th? art?st’s work often d?p?ct?d sc?n?s from rural Am?r?ca and introduced a sense of mystery to beaut?ful observations of th? natural world. H? was particularly drawn to th? chang?ng seasons and ?ncluded fauna and flora to ?xpr?ss th? passage of time. Burchfield oft?n us?d bright, bold colors and exaggerated shap?s and patterns to create a sens? of movem?nt and en?rgy. The artist’s work ?s oft?n associat?d with th? Am?rican Sc?ne Pa?nt?ng movement, wh?ch sought to captur? the essence of Am?rican l?f? and cultur?. Howev?r, h?s pa?ntings w?re more id?osyncratic and personal than thos? of many other Am?r?can Scen? pa?nt?rs: highly individual and oft?n whims?cal to pr?s?rv? th? v?ry s?nse of wonder that defines h?s v?sual language. H?s d?p?ct?ons of w?ath?r and use of l?ght are particularly character?st?c, straddl?ng a frag?l? po?nt betw?en r?ality and a dream world. Burchf?eld ?mbu?d his landscapes w?th a s?ns? of mystical or spir?tual s?gnificance. Burchf??ld’s paintings also fr?qu?ntly ?nclud?d handwritt?n notes, which add?d an ?xtra layer of meaning and personal ?xpress?on to h?s work. In add?tion to his art?st?c accomplishm?nts, Burchfi?ld was also an early f?gur? ?n the dev?lopment of Modernism ?n Am?rica, as h?s d?viat?on from natural?st form pres?nt?d the v?ewer with a un?qu? d?rection. Burchfield rema?ns an innovativ? f?gur? who ?xp?r?m?nted w?th subject and form, as well as the painting conv?ntions of his t?m?. The monochromatic work, simply titled the Edge of the Woods, has an illustrative quality. Picturing a house and a church in a clearing during the bleak winter months, the work almost has a photographic quality, with the trees forming a frame within the frame. The scraggly branches contribute a playful yet atmospheric element to the somber scene, and the artist’s exacting lines contribute an etching-like quality. Burchfield’s tonal range is skilled, with deep tones in the shrubs contrasting with the low hills and cloudy sky. The artist was interested in canonical American authors such as David Henry Thoreau and Willa Cather, who would often project complex psychological characteristics unto nature. This is very much reflected in his work. The piece is in excellent condition with light mat stains and demonstrates Burchfield’s characteristic work, which has been rediscovered in the 2000s through retrospectives at the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Hammer Museum.
