        BURCK, Jacob (American [born Poland], 1907-1982). Original Chicago Sun-Times Editorial Cartoon “Higher and Higher”: Alan Shepard becomes first American in Space. 1961. Ink and charcoal on paper. Signed, titled, and dated by Burck, with notation at upper edge indicating the cartoon was intended for the Special Saturday edition, almost certainly for the morning paper following Alan Shepard’s historic flight on Friday, May 5, 1961. Burck illustrates Shepard’s historic trip as the first American in space, showing the astronaut looking out of his space capsule down at Earth. 22 x 14 ¼”.

        Jacob Burck, "I Did Too See a Flying Ball" Original Pencil and Gouache on Coquille Paper Presented to Major General Hoyt S. Vandenberg, 1952. From the Pulitzer Prize Winning political cartoonist of the Chicago Times and later Chicago Sun-Times, Jacob Burck (1907-1982) enjoyed a career that spanned 44 years. His works were collected by presidents and are in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian, MOMA, Whitney, Chicago Art Institute and the Philadelphia and Boston Museums of Fine Art. After running in the Chicago Times, Burck gifted this illustration to Major General Hoyt S. Vandenberg who tried to tamp the growing hysteria regarding flying saucer and alien ship sightings "I don't believe there is such thing as flying saucers. But there are physical phenomena which make them say they have seen flying saucers. They are not machines flown by men from Mars, nor from any foreign powers. Nor does the Air Force or any US military agency have a flying saucer." Inscribed in top right corner "To Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg, with all good wishes, J. Burck. P.S. Stop Worrying!" Excellent condition (pasting remnants on verso) 18 x 14" and one of the best pieces of space related art in the auction. From General Vandenberg's estate auction in 2005, San Francisco.
