Burgess, 9 inches x 12 inches, as well as a drawing of a faun's head, graphite on paper, attributed to British artist Frank Wardle (act. 1882-1888), 6.25 inches x 5.25 inches, a pen and ink drawing of a young woman in profile, signed lower left Ida J. Burgess and dated 1885, 7 inches x 8 inches, an expansive summer landscape in watercolor, also attributed to Frank Wardle, 4.4 inches x 6.5 inches, an interior watercolor of a fireplace attributed to Ida J.       Ida Josephine Burgess (American, 1855-1934) A Song of Spring, 1891 oil on canvas signed and dated lower left 33 1/2" x 70" Literature: The House Beautiful, v. 5, December 1898, pp. 261 (illustrated) and 264. Catalog Note: Ida Josephine Burgess created the mural decorations for the Women's Reception Room of the Illinois State Building at the World's Columbian Exposition, held in Chicago in 1893. A Song of Spring was designed for a mantelpiece and was likely included in the exposition.

      Burgess, Ida (American, 1855-1934) Oil Painting. "Nudes in Forest". Impressionist oil on canvas. Unsigned. In good condition. Measures 14 inches x 10 inches. Frame measures 21 inches x 17 inches. From Askart: Ida Josephine Burgess was born in Chicago, Illinois on January 5, 1855. She studied art in New York at Cooper Union and at the Art Students League with William Merritt Chase and Walter Shirlaw. As a young girl, Ida and her sister had their portrait painted by the well -known portrait painter, William Cogswell. As a young woman she traveled to France to study painting, eventually winding up in the studio of Mssr. L.O. Merson. While in France, she produced her most famous work "During the Mass; Normandie", which was exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1885. She returned to Chicago, where she won the competition for mural decoration for the Women's Reception Room of the Illinois State Building at the 1893 Columbian Exhibition World's Fair in Chicago. She was a specialist in stained glass and decorated the Orrington Lunt Library at Northwestern University, Evanston IL. During the period 1892-1903, she exhibited nine paintings at the Art Institute of Chicago. She died in New York in July 1934.
