          Comprising an 'Old Butternut Tree' original etching by Ruth P. Burgess (1865-1934). The artist was a naturalistic painter of portraits, still lifes, and genre work, the painting measures 7.1/4 in. (18.4 cm.) x 6.1/2 in. (16.5 cm.), and the frame measures 13.1/2 in. (34.4 cm.); and a group of four 'Mediterranean view' painting depicting shores, boats, and traditional Mediterranean architecture, signed by the artist, the largest paintings measures 7.3/8 in. (18.7 cm.) x 3.3/4 in. (9.5 cm.), and the associated frame measures 11.5/8 in. (29.6 cm.) x 7.3/8 in. (18.8 cm.); a large J & L. Pini & Co. carved wood barometer, 47 in. (119.4 cm.) high, 21.1/4 in.           Ruth Payne Burgess (American/Vermont, 1865-1934), "Blue and White Jar", oil on canvas, signed, titled and "E. & A. Milch, New York City, NY" label on stretcher, 20 1/4 in. x 16 1/4 in., framed, overall 26 1/2 in. x 22 1/2 in. x 1 1/2 in. Note: Ruth Payne Burgess was born in Montpelier, Vermont. She attended the Mary A. Burnham School in Northampton, Massachusetts before studying at the Art Students League of New York as well as in Germany and Italy. In 1885, she married John William Burgess, founder of the political science department at Columbia University. After opening an art studio in New York, Burgess became known for her works in oil and watercolor with portraiture, still lifes and landscapes her preferred subjects. Her work was included in nine exhibitions at the National Academy of Design from 1897 to 1906 as well as from 1924 to 1933. In 1899, Burgess joined the National Association of Women Artists and the Woman’s Art Club of New York, where she served as the president from 1905 to 1910.

Frame abrasion with wear to the edges. Few minor spots of possible old restoration, including to the lower left quadrant. Otherwise in overall good condition.

Frame rub with wear to the edges. Stretcher impressions to all four sides. Few scattered areas of loss to pigment. Areas of uneven varnish and old staining. Could benefit from a light cleaning.

Shewas born in Montpelier, Vermont in 1865, the daughter of Elisha P. Jewett and Julia Kellogg Field Jewett. Her grandparents were Captain Nathan Jewett and Ruth Payne and her great-grandfather was Elisha Payne. She attended school in Northampton, Massachusetts at the Mary A. Burnham School. Ruth Payne Jewett met John William Burgess in Vermont through a mutual friend, artist Thomas Waterman Wood. Burgess founded the Columbia University's political science department. She married John Williams Burgess on September 2, 1885. Burgess was previously married on August 24, 1869 to Augusta Thayer Jones, who died in 1884. She was described as an artist who was "highly intelligent, well educated, and an accomplished musician." Ruth and her husband had one child, Elisha Payne Jewett Burgess,
