Sheila Burlingame American (1894-1969) Peek-A-Boo, c. 1940 woodblock print signed 8 x 6 3/8 inches Other Notes: Sheila Burlingame was an exceptional craftsperson known for producing work in a variety of media. She painted in oils and watercolors, explored printmaking with wood cuts and batik, and created sculptures in bronze, terra-cotta, wood, and plaster. She studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Student's League, NY. By 1921, Burlingame was making her home in Clayton, Missouri, and had a studio in the Central West End at Taylor and Olive. She was a member of the St. Louis Artist's Guild, where she exhibited regularly. The Central Library also held two separate exhibitions of her work in batik and woodcuts respectively. Her woodcuts graced the pages of the St. Louis Post Dispatch and accompanied Harry Burke's text for his book, From the Day's Journey, a chronicle of the places and characters of St. Louis. Although she maintained a residence in Clayton, Burlingame went to Europe in the late 1930's for further study in sculpture and when she returned, made her home in New York City. Her work was shown in exhibitions at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, Art Institute of Chicago, Kansas City Art Institute, and the National Academy of Design.
