Johann Nepomuk Franz Xaver Strixner (1782 Altötting - 1855 Munich) after Giovanni Antonio Burrini (1656 Bologna - 1727 ibid.): St Catherine of Alexandria, c. 1808, Lithography Technique: Lithography on Paper Inscription: At the lower part signed in the printing plate: "Burino | N: Strixner del:". Date: c. 1808 Description: Johann Nepomuk Strixner was a German draughtsman and printmaker who made a name for himself particularly through the print reproduction of old hand drawings. Around 1808, he worked together with the inventor of lithography, Aloys Senefelder, on the publication of a series of lithographic reproductions after Albrecht Dürer. In 1809, he enrolled at the Academy in Munich, where he deepened the technical skills he had already learnt in engraving and lithography through intensive study. He was particularly interested in the works of the Old Masters. Between 1808 and 1815, together with Johann Nepomuk Strixner, he published an extensive series of lithographs after Old Master drawings. This multifaceted work emphasises the full skill of the two artists, who copied the drawings onto the stone with a sensitive eye and convey a good impression of the original work in their reproductions. A characteristic feature of many of the sheets is the basis of a discreetly coloured clay plate with scratched-out areas, presumably intended to imitate the white heightening and different paper colours of the originals. Piloty and Strixner used the technique of lithography in all its facets and always endeavoured to give their reprints the same delicacy and depth that characterise the hand drawings of the Old Masters. Keywords: Lithograph series, Old Masters, Study, Saint, Attributes, Putto, 19th century, Romanticism, Fashion, Italy,

Saint Jerome oil on canvas 33 7/8 x 281/2 in. (86 x 72.5 cm.) NOTES We are grateful to Dr. Ann Sutherland Harris for the attribution, given on the basis of photographs. Dr. Sutherland Harris notes the close similarities, for example in 'the technique with rough brushed highlights in the hair [and] along [the] edges of drapery folds', between the present picture and Burrini's Virgin with Saints Petronius and Dionysus the Areopagite painted in 1684 for the church of S Giacomo Maggiore, Bologna (now in Monghidoro, parish church; see D. Benati, ed., Disegni emiliani del sei-settecento, Milan, 1991, p. 223, illustrated). She also remarks on the physiognomical similarity between the figure of Saint Petronius in the latter work and that of Saint Jerome in the present picture.

The Cumaean Sibyl oil on canvas 34 5/8 x 263/4 in. (88 x 68 cm.) PROVENANCE August St„helin Paravicini (1871-1951), Basel. NOTES Burrini was one of the most gifted Bolognese painters of his age, noted for his dramatic, painterly style, and a chief proponent of the neo-Venetian current in late-seventeenth-century Bolognese art. He trained in the studios of Domenico Maria Canuti and Lorenzo Pasinelli and travelled to Venice. His vigorous style is said to have influenced the development of Giuseppe Maria Crespi, with whom he shared a studio in 1686-8. Burrini depicted the Cumaean Sibyl on various occasions (see for example, E. Ricc¢mini, Giovanni Antonio Burrini, Ozzano Emilia, 1999, pp. 161 and 213-4, nos. 5 and 44, pls. 5 and 93). The style of the present picture closely compares to Maddalena ( ibid., pp. 174-5, no. 11, pls. IX and 24): for example, the treatment of the highlights on the curls, the smooth skin surface and lips, and the fluid brushstrokes in the drapery.
