CONTACT US John Coleman Burroughs (Illinois, California, 1913 - 1979) John Coleman (or "Jack") Burroughs was born in Chicago in February 1913, as the youngest son of Tarzan author Edgar Rice Burroughs. John was a talented artist in his own right, and illustrated all his father's novels from 1937 on. In the 1940s, he illustrated the 'John Carter of Mars' Sunday newspaper strip, as well as a 'David Innes of Pellicudar' comic book feature and numerous Big Little Book covers. His wife, Jane Ralston, assisted him in the artwork and lettering and served as a model for the heroines he drew. In 1967, Ballantine Books published his solo novel 'Treasure of the Black Falcon'.

            JOHN COLEMAN BURROUGHS (American 1913 - 1979) John Carter of Mars comic strip illustration Ink on paper 16 x 21 in. Not signed Most likely drawn as the prototype for the John Carter of Mars comic strip, this artwork represents one of the most important ERB originals known to exist. Coleman Burroughs' trademark drybrush style, which incorporated the influence of Alex Raymond, is never more evident than in this great, self-contained introduction to the freewheeling characters of the long-lasting Mars series. Any John Carter original by Coleman Burroughs is extremely rare as the vast majority are held by the Burroughs Estate, and this example can be considered the best of the best.
