Robert William Buss (1804 - 1875 United Kingdom) 'Mr. Richard Doddicomb, The Musical Bore' Oil on canvas Unsigned, attached papers of the period attribute the work to Robert Buss Circa 1839 The work measures 36 x 43 inches Awakened neighbors complain at 2:30 am while Handel looks on disapprovingly. This painting served as an illustration for Burton's Gentleman's Magazine October of 1839. Burton's was a monthly review edited by Edgar Allen Poe and illuminated with poems, fiction, and essays largely of interest to men. 'The Musical Bore' was a literary sketch by William E. Burton himself who worked in the theater as an actor and launched the magazine in 1837. To compete with other magazines, Burton's often commissioned the engraving of illustrations from drawings and paintings. These illustrations would appear at the front of the magazine in the days when illustrating a publication was expensive. An original mezzotint engraving titled THE MUSICAL BORE 'Engraved For Burton's Gentleman's Magazine, Painted by R.W. Buss' is included with this lot.

    Est: £3,000 - £5,000

ATTRIBUTED TO ROBERT WILLIAM BUSS (BRITISH, 1804-1875) The Wooden Walls of Old England Oil on canvas 21 x 28in. (53.3 x 71cm.) This painting depicts characters from Scottish author Tobias Smollett's The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle, first published in 1751 The main character, Peregrine Pickle, is an orphan placed in the guardianship of Commodore Hawser Trunnion who lives in a garrison along with his shipmates. In this painting, the Commodore is pictured, along with one of his housemates, re-enacting an action from his naval career. Buss also did an engraving of the same scene, though it should be noted that this scene is not taken from the book, it only uses characters from the book. It is believed that Trunnion's lifestyle influenced the creation of Wemmick in Dicken's Great Expectations. Robert William Buss (1804-1875) was a Victorian caricaturist, illustrator, painter, and etcher best known for his painting Dickens' Dream. He painted many portraits of famous actors of his day, and did the illustrations for Frances Trollope's The Widow Married and for Frederick Marryat's Peter Simple.

DELAYING PAPA DELAYING PAPA 107x91cm.; 42x36in. oil on canvas PROVENANCE Mr Hardie, Manchester Thence by descent NOTE A charming scene of family life, the painting depicts Mr Hardie, a man of business who was often away for long periods, saying goodbye to his young family. The little girl, Blanche, not wanting her father to leave, would often hide his hat and scarf so that he could not go. The expression on the little girl's face indicates that this is what she is about to do. In the background a hat box can be seen on the top of a wardrobe and a doll lying on the floor signifying that the girl's father was more important to her than her toys.
