Kendall Buster Sketch for Yellow Highrise Vessel D; E; and F Triptych, Print with Epson archival ink on Somerset Velvet fine art paper 2012. Edition 1/5. Provenance: the artist. Kendall Buster's (American, b. 1954) expansive sculptures adopt and transform elements of our natural landscape. Their components are inspired by anything from the microscopic organisms Buster once observed through a microscope during her previous career as a microbiologist to the geographic forms that surround us daily. Sketches for Yellow Highrise Vessel D; E; and F are stylized renderings of Buster's sculpture titled Yellow Highrise (2005). The structure is nearly spherical, with a 12-foot diameter, and consists of 12 layers of scrim material stretched over a metal armature. A passageway allows visitors to become engulfed in the small space within. Yellow Highrise is simultaneously a model for a 12-story fantasy building with biomorphic capabilities and sculpture. Buster states, "Biological associations come into play, the structure referencing at once a pair of superimposed urns or bulbs, a high rise conceived of as a fantasy hive." Buster's large-scale sculptures, which the artist terms "biological architecture," have been exhibited in numerous venues including the Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, DC; the Kemper Museum in Kansas City, MO; and the Bahnhof Westend in Berlin, Germany. She is currently working on a project for architect Will Bruder's Agave Branch Library in Phoenix, AZ. After receiving a degree in medical technology, Buster earned a BFA from the Corcoran College of Art and Design, an MFA in sculpture from Yale University and participated in the Whitney Museum's Independent Study Studio Program. She was the recipient of a 2005 American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in the Arts. Her site-specific artwork Stratum Pier is one of ten commissioned artworks that comprise the IMA's 100 Acres: The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art and Nature Park. 30" x 24" each
