Rene Buthaud (1886-1986) Monumental Ceramic Vase
Est: $5,000 - $7,000
Monumental Rene Buthaud signed ceramic vase circa 1935. Rene Buthaud was seen as the most accomplished and important French artists of the Art Deco period, an opinion held to this day. He was a painter and also designed simple ceramic stoneware forms, made for him by local potters, and used crackle glazes with which to decorate them. He had worked with Jean Dupas and like many of the period he was also influenced by African tribal art, evident in those pieces where he used lusters or what he called "peau de serpente" (snakeskin). Many of his best-known pieces are painted with supine female nudes. Work by Buthaud can be found in the collections of the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among many others. Size: 14.5" x 12.5". Condition: Very good.

René Buthaud (1886 - 1986) Art Deco Ceramic Vase. Signed RB to underside. Rene Buthaud is recognized as perhaps the most important ceramicist of the French Art Deco movement. While the style that he developed is quite specific and recognizable, he produced pieces showing great stylistic variety, and drew inspiration from many sources. Buthaud drew inspiration from numerous sources. African art was an important influence for many Art Deco creators, and can be found in Rene’s work. He also made use of the geometry that was a major element of Art Deco design, but perhaps his best pieces are figural, with stylized women and vegetation portrayed in his own very distinctive style. His preferred palette tended to black, brown and earth colors. Buthaud’s work is highly sought-after today, and has been exhibited in a number of major museums, among them the Museé des Arts Decoratifs and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York city. BUTHAUD René (Saintes 1886 - Bordeaux 1986) - « Flore ». Circa 1930 Dessin au crayon. Signé en bas au centre. 21x14cm. Dans un encadrement. Ce travail est une mise au carreau, ce qui nous laisse à penser qu'il s'agit bien d'un travail préparatoire pour la réalisation d'une céramique. On reconnaît particulièrement dans cette œuvre l'influence de Jean Dupas dont il fut le contemporain. Un dessin préparatoire à celui-ci fut vendu le 5 décembre 2015 chez Me Briscadieu sous le numéro 105.
