Mildred Anne Butler RWS (1858-1941) WATER PARTY, KILMURRY, 1891-2 watercolour heightened with white signed and titled lower left; dated lower right h:20.50  w:14 in. The National Gallery of Ireland will highlight the work of Mildred Anne Butler (MAB) this year with an exhibition titled At Home in Nature (14 September 2024 to 5 January 2025) describing her as "one of Ireland's first professional women artists, who exhibited widely and sold her work well throughout her career."(1) Water Party, Kilmurry, 1891-2 is a large, early exhibition painting by MAB shown at the Watercolour Society of Ireland in 1893; the artist's second year of submitting work there. Over the course of her career she would show more than 200 works with that society alone, the majority, like this example, taking inspiration from her home in Kilmurry, outside Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny. Kilmurry House - a Palladian style Georgian manor on 350 acres - was purchased by the grandson of the 11th Viscount Mountgarret, Captain Henry Butler, Mildred Anne's father, in the late 1800s and remained in the family until 1981. Mildred Anne lived in Kilmurry until her death at the age of 83, its orangery used by her as a studio and the gardens, their flora and fauna, providing a constant stream of inspiration as can be seen in the present work. MAB began exhibiting in her mid-twenties, the Irish Fine Art Society exhibition in Cork records two watercolours by her in 1884. The following year she travelled to Europe, painting throughout this time, and later she went to London in the company of fellow artist Rose Barton where she studied under Paul Jacob Naftel. It was under Naftel's instruction that she began working en plein air and taking inspiration from the natural world. In 1888 her work appeared at the Dudley Gallery, London, and, beginning in 1891, she participated in five exhibitions at the RHA. During the 1890s Butler followed the example of many of her Irish contemporaries travelling to Newlyn, Cornwall in the company of fellow artist May Guinness; studying there under Norman Garstin. In 1896, Butler's Morning Bath was shown at the Royal Academy, London and was at that time only the second work by a female artist to be acquired by the trustees of the Chantrey Bequest and presented to the Tate where it remains today. This prestigious acquisition boosted her profile considerably among her contemporaries and patrons alike in Ireland and abroad. Her work entered the Royal Collection for the first time in 1893, when it was included in a book of watercolours presented to Princess Mary of Teck by the Society of Lady Artists on the occasion of her marriage to the future king George V, and later in 1902 as part of a portfolio gifted to Edward VII from the RWS upon his coronation among other instances. She was also one of the first nine academicians elected to the Ulster Academy of Arts in 1930. She became an associate member of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1896 and full membership was granted in 1937; four years before her death. In 1981 - with the sale of Kilmurry - the contents of the artist's studio were auctioned, sparking renewed interest in her work; a retrospective followed in Kilkenny and Dublin. This portrait view of swans in a pond at Kilmurry is an outstanding example by an artist on the cusp of her prime and it would have represented a shrewd purchase in 1893 just before her work was acquired by the Royal family and demand for her paintings increased considerably. 130 years later and had its whereabouts been known, A Water Party would have been perfectly "at home" in the National Gallery's forthcoming celebration of her work. Est: £3,000 - £4,000

Mildred Anne Butler, RA, RWS, Irish 1858-1941- View of a garden; and View of a pond across the lake; each pencil and watercolour on paper, the first signed 'Mildred A. Butler' (lower right), the second signed 'M. A. Butler' (lower left), the first 53 x 35.8 cm., the second 36 x 26.5 cm., two (2). Provenance: The estate of the late designer Anthony Powell. Note: The present works exhibit the Impressionistic tendencies typical of Butlers output, with her paintings en plein-air evoking her connection with the Newlyn and, by extension, the Barbizon Schools. The artists use of watercolour, the medium for which she was best known, enhances her landscapes, evoking the gentle movement of the foliage through the softly-blended pigments. The minimal figural presence in these works creates a sense of uninterrupted idyll and peace. Please refer to department for condition report

Provenance: Bears label on the reverse inscribed 'MacGillacuddy's Reeks from Glencar' and the studio stamp 'Miss Mildred A. Butler, Kilmurry, Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny'. Purchased by The Toler Aylward Family, Shanhill Castle, Paulstown, Co Kilkenny directly from the artist; Fonsie Mealy Auctioneers, Kilkenny, 2013, Lot 632; Private Collection In the distance, an early morning mist still clings to the valleys and peaks of the MacGillicuddy Reeks, with Carrauntwohill towering above this mountainous Kerry landscape. Enlivened by a few bushes and trees, a large expanse of bog extends below the mountains. In the foreground, followed by a girl in a red dress, four geese walk along a bog road. Pecking at the grass, the geese waddle along unconcernedly. However, on closer inspection, it appears the girl has a long knife in one hand, and a dead goose in the other. This theme of 'the goose girl' appears regularly in paintings of rural life in Ireland, and allowed artists to contrast a romantic ideal of life in the country, with the grimmer realities of raising animals to provide food.

Mildred Anne Butler RWS (1858-1941) Springtime (1896-98) watercolour with touches of white heightening signed 'Mildred A. Butler' lower left h:73.50  w:53 cm. Provenance: From the Estate of the artist's niece, Mrs Doreen Archer-Houblon, Kilmurry House, Co Kilkenny; Christie's, London, Watercolours by Mildred Anne Butler, 13th October 1981, Lot 13, where purchased by the present owner Exhibited: Old Water-Colour Society, Winter 1898, No.180; Dublin and Kilkenny, Mildred Anne Butler, 1981, no.27 In this large watercolour by Mildred Anne Butler-one of her finest works-three girls pick flowers in a meadow by a river. In the background is a stand of trees. Although Butler's paintings are timeless, there is an essential Edwardian quality to her art; a sense of peaceful summer pastures, peacocks on lawns, and evening mists in winter woodlands. Spanning the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, her watercolours embody classic elements of Victorian culture, such as an interest in gardens, trees and animals-the latter frequently assigned anthropomorphic roles-but transcend the conventionality and sentimentality of much Victorian art. In later years she produced sensitive depictions of cattle grazing, walled gardens and herbaceous borders, often in the setting of Kilmurry, near Thomastown in County Kilkenny, the house where she was born in 1858, and died in 1941. Grandson of the 11th Viscount Mountgarret, Butler's father, Captain Henry Butler, was also an artist. He wrote and illustrated a book on big-game hunting, South African Sketches, published in 1841. Her mother, Ciara Butler (née Taylor), had come to Ireland from Leicester. The youngest in the family, Mildred Anne had two siblings, Walter and Isabel. She studied art first under Frederick Brown, at the Westminster School of Art. Then, in 1885, she and a relative, Lady French, toured France, Switzerland and Italy. Her work from this period reveals the influence of another tutor, Paul Naftel, who ran a school in London, and gave correspondence courses. Butler was a dedicated student, studying the technique of watercolour painting with Naftel, the depiction of animals with William Frank Calderon, and absorbing a French Realist aesthetic from Henri Gervex in Paris. In 1894, along with May Guinness, she travelled to Newlyn in Cornwall, where Norman Garstin was teaching a style of Northern European Impressionism. First exhibiting in 1888 with the Dudley Gallery, Butler enjoyed both commercial success and popularity. She showed regularly with the Watercolour Society of Ireland, and the Royal Academy. In 1891 her painting Morning was purchased by the Chantrey Bequest, and that same year Out in the Open attracted favourable comment from Queen Victoria. Two years later she was asked to contribute to a portfolio, to be presented to Princess May. She also contributed to a presentation to King Edward VII, and in 1910 Queen Alexandra purchased one of her paintings. Peter Murray, March 2019
