    James Edward Buttersworth (1817-1894) The Clipper Ship Staghound. Circa 1850. Stag Hound was launched on December 7, 1850 in East Boston, Massachusetts. Designed by shipbuilder Donald McKay for the California trade, she was briefly the largest merchant ship in the world. She was in active service from 1851 until her total loss in 1861. Oil on canvas. Signed LR. Frame: H 34-3/4" W 41-5/8" D 2-1/4". Canvas: H 29-1/8" W 36". Provenance: Forsythe Wickes Collection. Condition: Relined. Inspected under UV light. No retouching noted.     This is an original signed oil painting on board by James Edward Buttersworth (English, 1817-1894). He specialized in maritime art and is considered among the foremost ship portraitists in the United States of the nineteenth century. His paintings are particularly known for their meticulous detail, dramatic settings, and grace in movement. This painting features the Yacht America hounding the flag boat in a sailing match off the Isle of Wight, English channel. Framed and signed lower right. Label on reverse. The frame is 14 3/4 x 10 3/4" and the sight is 11 3/4 x 7 3/4". The board is 12 x 8".
