Byers (b. 1918) has been an integral member of the West Coast School of photography, befriending many of its most influential proponents, and expanding its institutional reach. While Byers' life began in a world apart from photography,”with degrees from UC Berkeley, Harvard Law, and Harvard Business Schools, which led to a prosperous career in law,”his studies with Ansel Adams, Wynn Bullock, and Brett Weston galvanized a lifelong passion for the medium. Byers' best friend, the modernist superstar Brett Weston, was a frequent companion on photo trips and a client of his firm. Byers was connected with many of the leading photographers in California and abroad through his 19-year tenure as Treasurer of the Friends of Photography, Carmel,”an epicenter for the West Coast photography community. Not only did this network of notable photographers influence his personal artwork, but allowed him to source prints for galleries, institutions, and his personal collection,”being shown for the first time in this sale through Seagrave Gallery.
