WILLIAM BYGRAVE (AMERICAN, MID-NINETEENTH CENTURY). BRIGANTINE NEWSBOY ENTERING MESSINA, ITALY, CIRCA 1860.

      Est: $30,000 - $50,000

Oil on canvas, 24 1/2 x 36 3/4 inches.Little is known of William Bygrave, who painted several American vessels in the port of Messina. It is highly possible he was an ex-patriot English artist trained in Liverpool who worked in Sicily for a few years. His ship portraits have a charming naÔve quality usually incorporating the harbor esplanade with strolling elegant couples, soldiers, sailors, officials and horseback riders. Very few of his paintings are known but examples are in the collections of the Peabody Essex Museum (American Bark Starlight) and the Mystic Seaport Museum (Barque J. M. Thurston). Another Bygrave painting of the American Bark "Glenwood" was sold by Northeast Auctions, August 21, 2005, lot 945.Provenance: Vose Galleries, Boston.
