      DESCRIPTION: John Henry Byrd (American, 19th Century). Oil on oval canvas. Portrait of a young girl wearing a white dress, black beaded necklace, and colorful ribbon. In a simple, molded gold wood and gesso frame. Byrd was born in Ireland, and emigrated to America, settling in Arkansas. He is noted as the state's most prolific antebellum artist. He painted many of the prominent families and people in Arkansas: Samuel C. and John S. Roane, Peter Hanger, Chester Ashley. He also lived in Alabama and New Orleans, Louisiana, where he died. MEASUREMENTS: 29-1/4" x 23". Overall with frame 36" x 29-1/2". CONDITION: Craquelure. Some areas of exposed canvas. Frame wear.
