John (1945) Byrne Sold at Auction Prices

Sculptor

Scottish artist John Byrne graduated from the Glasgow School of Art in 1963. During the 80s, most of John Byrne's paintings were figural self-portraits. He was inspired by the works of Giotto, Picasso, and Magritte, which likely led to his need for a variety of styles in his artwork. He used a multitude of techniques that helped keep his work interesting but easily recognizable as his.

Later in his career, artist John Byrne designed vinyl record covers for Donovan and Gerry Rafferty, popular singers of that era. John Byrne's artwork also includes a contemporary portrait of actress Tilda Swinton, who he fathered twins with. If you're interested in adding to your collection, view varied styles of notable figural prints for sale online at Invaluable.

Purchased directly from the artist and thence by descent to the present owners. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, musicians were to feature heavily in Byrne's output. He had attended school with Jim Rafferty, brother of Gerry, who of course went on to become a celebrated singer-songwriter. Through Rafferty, Byrne also forged a friendship with Billy Connolly, whose career began as a folk musician before it pivoted towards comedy. Byrne famously designed the cover for the Humblebums first LP in 1969, and later the first three albums by Stealer’s Wheel. Byrne would also work closely with Donovan, another famous Glasgow son, who commissioned him in 1971 to design a cover for HMS Donovan, an album of children’s songs. They also worked on an animated film together – Donovan’s answer to Yellow Submarine - relocating for a month to Los Angeles together. The project never came to full fruition, however. In 2015, the two friends reunited to stage an exhibition dedicated to Donovan's career at Glasgow's House For An Art Lover which was curated by Byrne and featured many works pertaining to their artistic collaborations.

JOHN BYRNE R.S.A. (SCOTTISH 1940-2023) THE BEATLES - C.1969 Signed ‘Patrick’ lower left, oil on board 27cm x 32.5cm (10.5in x 12.75in) From The Collection of Father Tom Jamieson, Renfrew. Purchased directly from the artist and thence by descent to the present owners. In 1969 John Byrne, still under the guise of ‘Patrick’, created a painting of The Beatles for his December show at the Portal Gallery that year. This was a reference and reaction to the fact that Portal attracted a starry clientele, with some of the biggest names in British showbusiness of the day becoming frequent visitors. Among them were Julie Christie, Michael Caine, David Niven, David Bailey, The Beatles (particularly Ringo Starr who is thought to own ‘Patrick’ paintings), and Brian Epstein. The painting was purchased by the art director and graphic designer Alan Aldridge, who went on to use it as the frontispiece to The Beatles Illustrated Lyrics, published in 1969. It was later used as the cover of The Beatles Ballads LP twelve years later. Rumours suggest the original largescale work was lost by EMI records, so this work is a rare surviving early version. There is only one other known example, in a private collection in America. The image also became the subject of a lengthy legal battle for Byrne as he found it was being reproduced on t-shirts and posters without copyright. In the image, Byrne represents each Beatle seated beside a sort of ‘spirit animal’, perhaps which he felt best approximated their nature. Yoko Ono is seen in the crystal ball held by Lennon.
