RICARDO LOPEZ CABRERA (Cantillana, Seville, 1864 - Seville, 1950). "Female portrait", 1939. Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower left margin.

      Est: €800 - €1,000

RICARDO LOPEZ CABRERA (Cantillana, Seville, 1864 - Seville, 1950). "Female portrait", 1939. Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower left margin. Size: 69 x 58 cm; 87 x 76 cm (frame). Ricardo López Cabrera gives us the portrait of an elegant lady. She appears in the foreground, half-length on a neutral background that manages to introduce a greater impression of three-dimensionality in the image. The woman's gesture stands out in particular, as she looks forward with a slight smile, thus establishing contact with the viewer. Ricardo López Cabrera moved to Seville under the protection of Francisco Palazuelos, where he studied at the Santa Isabel de Hungría School of Fine Arts in Seville and was a pupil of Eduardo Cano de la Peña. In 1887 he was awarded a post as a pensioner in Rome by the Seville provincial council, where he furthered his studies for four years until 1892. On his return to Spain he made contact with the great painter José Jiménez Aranda, to whom he would feel truly close, not only on a personal level but also from an artistic point of view, as their aesthetic and cultural tastes coincided. Not very attached to prizes and honours, his work was exhibited, especially at the beginning of his career, in private circles, and he later took part in the National Fine Arts Exhibitions of 1892 and 1895, being awarded a third-class medal on both occasions. At the international level he took part with four canvases in the Universal Exhibition in Chicago in 1893. In 1906 he was appointed academician of merit of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary and professor of drawing at its School, a post he held until 1909, when he left for Argentina. There he taught at the Provincial School of Fine Arts in the town of Cordoba and painted numerous portraits on commission. However, the execution in 1913 of a large allegorical canvas measuring more than eight metres for the ceiling of the Salón de Grados of the University of Cordoba, and its irrecoverable deterioration over the following decade, led him to return to Spain in a somewhat bitter mood, and so in 1923 he returned to his homeland with the aim of producing fifteen tripty-five triptychs of a markedly ethnographic nature on Spanish regional customs, following the example of "The Vision of Spain" that Sorolla had produced for the Hispanic Society of New York. This work, conceived on a purely personal impulse and produced over a period of five years, was exhibited to great acclaim in 1928 at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid. Ricardo López Cabrera's artistic output covered a wide range of subjects, from landscape to genre painting and portraiture, as well as some orientalist pictures painted as a result of a trip to Morocco. He is currently represented in the Prado Museum, the Carmen Thyssen Museum in Malaga, the Fine Arts Museums of Granada, Murcia and Seville, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Santa Isabel de Hungría in Seville and the Municipal Museum of Cordoba (Argentina), among many other centres.

Measurements: 57 x 35.5 cm; 72.5 x 51 cm (frame). Scene of market where several groups of people gather to buy, it is interesting to note that the artist presents different popular characters, however they are only children, those who establish direct contact with the viewer. Thus contributing to the image, a certain innocence and joviality. Ricardo López Cabrera moved to Seville under the protection of Francisco Palazuelos, and there he developed his studies at the School of Fine Arts of Santa Isabel de Hungría in Seville, being a disciple of Eduardo Cano de la Peña. RICARDO LÓPEZ CABRERA 1864 Cantillana - 1950 Sevilla Altos hornos Signed "R. Lopez Cabrera / Bilbao". Sevillian painter, Ricardo Lopez Cabrera (Cantillana, Seville, 1864-Seville, 1930) studied at the School of Fine Arts of Santa Isabel de Hungría in Seville with José Jiménez Aranda, who would become his father-in-law. In 1887 he moved to Rome as a pensioner and attended the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts of 1892 and 1895, obtaining medals of third class. In 1909 he traveled for a short time to Buenos Aires, where he returned in 1911 to stay until 1923. In February 1923 he settled permanently in Spain. From the beginning of his career, he forged his artistic personality diametrically opposed to the prevailing historicist aesthetic of the moment. The artist follows paths more akin to his popular sensibility, his theme being defined in scenes of costumbrista court, portrait and landscape that will make up most of his artistic production. Initially a follower of Fortuny, he soon turned to a style of lighting in the style of Sorolla and applied it to landscapes, portraits, customs and other orientalist themes made during a trip to Morocco. Oil on canvas 55 x 68 cm Antique and 19th century painting, Contemporary paintingportraits, themes of customs and others of orientalist influence made on the occasion of a trip to Morocco.
